.sol Files for Dummies

This is a replica of Eldrial's original .sol Files for Dummies thread, updated with the pathway for Windows Vista and 7.
For those wondering, "How can I get my N save file to another computer?" or "How can I restart N?", here's what you'll need to know.

*Note: I do not have the magical power to recreate .sol files. If you have lost yours, do not contact me about getting your progress back. It's gone. What you can do is read this guide to learn how to prevent future occurrences.

Introduction

The n_v14b_userdata.sol, or ".sol", is the file that contains all your N peference datas. That includes your Configuration settings, your progress in your game, your personal bests, etc. With this file, you can move around your progress in the game to other computers and such so that you won't need to start all over on a new computer, as that can be quite tiresome.

Its Location

Windows Vista, 7:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\random series of letters and numbers\localhost

Windows 2000, XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\random series of letters and numbers\localhost

Windows 95, Me:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\random series of letters and numbers\localhost

*Application Data and subfolders will be hidden.
**For Windows users, you can directly access the Application Data/Roaming folder of your account by entering '%appdata%' into explorer.

To be able to see the files:
Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View.Select the option to show hidden files or folders.
A simple way to find your .sol file is to use the Search program. Search for All Files and Folders. Type in .sol in the first box. Before engaging the search, drop down to More Advanced Options and be sure that "Search system folders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Search subfolders" are checked.
Mac OS 9:
Macintosh HD/System Folder/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#Shared Objects/random string of letters and numbers/localhost

Mac OS X;
/Users/Short name/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects/random series of letters and numbers/localhost

Using the Files

.sol must always be located in these locations. When moving the file from computer to computer, be sure to place it in the correct folder, or else N will not read the .sol you're trying to use. Do not have more than one of the same type of .sol in the folder.

*You should always keep a backup .sol file. It's not the best thing to happen to lose all your progress that you've worked long and hard for. So if you're moving around .sol files, keep a backup somewhere in case it gets lost or corrupted. Keep the backup in a seperate folder.

Never open a .sol file, unless you have a backup and you know what you're doing. If you decide to try to pry through the file, make sure you have a backup as messing around with .sol files can easily corrupt them.

When copying .sol files into an e-mail to move it to a different computer or for similar reasons, be sure to Zip or compress the files, as most e-mail domains will take the file as a text file and not function correctly when saved.

Concerning .sol files

**Never ask for a .sol file, as you will never legitimately receive one from any member of the forum. Never publicly distribute .sol files to beggars. Your post will deleted and warned depending on the cicumstances.

What I've done in that situation is to open N, play the first level real quick once, then close out and you should have a new .sol in the right location that you can replace with the one you've been using.

You could just search the C:\ drive on your computer. Remember to turn on the setting to check hidden files and folders. That should tell you where your .sol file is.

I think I'm having a .sol issue where it's not being saved or something. Whenever I start the game the columns/settings are reset. Another thing, which probably isn't related is that n seems to be causing my computer to lag a lot as well.

For the .sol not saving, I would suggest checking the Flash player settings and make sure that the storage option is set to unlimited. Or another thing that has sometimes worked for me is to just make sure that you're logged in on the configure screen. If its not one of those two issues, then I'm out of advice.

Hey, I am a long time fan of this game but just started playing again. Before I never had problems saving my progress but now i am struggling. I found my .sol file and it is where it should be. I play the game but then when i quit and come back it has lost all progress that i made. Golf, you said to check flash player settings, how do i get to my flash player settings?? i thought i could just control-click on N when it was running but then it crashes. any help??
Thanks

EDIT: deleted all of the folders in #SharedObjects then started N. It created its file there and now it is working fine!

I have a question... I'm using a Macbook Pro- and cant find my .sol file... I did read your explanation of what to do, because I really want to redo the game from scratch, but cant find the .sol file. I tried to look for "*.sol" but nothing came up, I used Finder search and Spotlight. I just was wondering- is there a clear cut direct way to get to my file- like something to type in somewhere or something like that... Sorry if I'm being vague

Is there a way to copy a .sol from my home computer and put it on my school computer even though access to C: has been disallowed?

HOW the heck do I convert my .sol file!? I can't open it, and I kind of need to-I just only found it today after about three on-off again months of searching. I won't give up- and I need a Mac compatible software/application that can convert/open .sol files. Any help?

If you're trying to hack your .sol file, then just download NReality, its an add-on to the N game that will let you hack your .sol file, modify your scores, etc. We all use it!

If the "download NReality" post was directed towards me, I've already had NReality for a while, but I will look for the .sol file, would it be in the same area as the other .sol file, in logdata folder or whatever?

Ok well the point we were making is that NReality changes your .sol so you can not hack it. Here we frown upon people who hack their .sols. I am not sure what you intentions are but you should not be converting or editing your .sol in any way. That is what we call cheating and we do not put up with that here.

Since you, xxNRulesxx, have been asking these questions we have had a hacker on the boards somewhere around ep 80 to 81, now gone, it just seems odd that the time you start asking suspicious questions a new hacker appears

EDIT: Hacker is still there on 83-0 & 83-1

Guys, lay off. The phrasing of the question, asking how to "convert" the .sol, does not seem like it has anything to with hacking.

We're not sure what you're actually trying to do, though, xxNRulesxx.
