Yeah, I'm bored. So what? Plus I'm interested to see what music this board listens to.
I feel the top of the roof come off, kill everybody there as I'm watching all the stars burn out, trying to pretend that I care.

But I didn't, no-one ever does, and I would, no-one ever will

Can't you see it's all flown out of my hands and our clothes are all too often ripped and our teeth are all too often gnashed and it lasts as long as it possibly can but I just don't accept this.

I just don't accept this at all.

Faces sweaty, arms and legs, what a glorious set of stairs we make.

We kill everyone with arrowheads, arrowheads, arrowheads. Thank god that's over.

Bloodhail is probably my favorite, but its on the weaker side. The second half's last three songs The Future, I Don't Love, and Earthmover are all unreal as well, and the fact that they all come in a row at the end makes it even better.

Also, I have the two Deerhunter discs as well, but i havent gotten around to listening to them. I probably should.

@Borealis: I can't wait until i get Traced In Air in the mail. Its a shame its so hard to find in person in America.

Also, Opeth-Watershed was extremely disappointing. Extremely.

I liked the new Coheed and Cambria album far more than Bedlam. Was the Coheed this year? I can't actually remember.

In any event, Death Magnetic is amazing. And I have a thing for Weezer's third Weezer.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Dig Lazarus Dig
The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath
Crystal Antlers - Crystal Antlers (EP)

All rock albums, I don't think it was a particularly strong year for hip hop but honourable mentions to:

The Herd - Summerland
Murs - Murs for President

Also, one of my favourite rap albums The Dusty Foot Philosopher by K'naan got a US release this year.

There's a couple of albums I still want to check out before this list is concrete, Dear Science by TV on the Radio and Time: Line by Nicolay and Kay. And judging by the love he's getting I should probably look into this Sigur Ross guy...

Just knew I'd forget something. Consider Detrimentalist by Venetian Snares to be my number 6 spot and everything else to be bumped down one.

@atob, now I'm going to have to listen to Twenty One again. Never paid it enough attention the first time 'round, apparently.

In no particular order:

Los Campesinos! - Hold on now Youngster + We are Beautiful, We are Doomed (You've gotta love a band who can make two consistently brilliant albums in one year)
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Johnny Foreigner - Waited up 'til it was Light
Johnny Flynn - A Larum
Mystery Jets - Twenty One
Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke
The Grates - Teeth Lost, Hearts Won
Mumford and Sons - Love Your Ground EP + Lend me your Eyes EP
Lykke Li - Youth Novels

It's an immensly good album, you'll be glad you waited. Only fault I can find is that it's a little too short. I partially agree with you on Watershed. I only really like Hessian Peel and The Lotus Eater.

"Also, Opeth-Watershed was extremely disappointing. Extremely."

FALLLLLLLLLLLSE! Actually, I thought that too originally, but that was before I heard 4 of the songs live. The cd is AMAZING, just keep listening.

"12. Steven Wilson-Insurgentes (Progressive Rock) http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/ ... surgentes/"

I did not know he had released this!! I've been eagerly awaiting new Porcupine Tree, hopefully it comes soon!!

That said, I am truly dissapointed in these lists, only two of you mention the Opeth album and the Sigur Ros album (thank you borealis!)?!? C'mon!

Opeth - Watershed
Sigur Ros - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
36 Crazyfists - The Tide and its' Takers
Protest the Hero - Fortress
Gojira - The Way of All Flesh
Metallica - Death Magnetic (Not because it was awesome, but because it did not suck!)
Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation
In Flames - A Sense of Purpose (They can be pretty lame, but I love their sound no matter what.)

Also, it's not a CD, but Nevermore's release "The Year of the Voyager" is a really good DVD. They should be coming out with a cd in 2009 (haven't had one since '05!) and it should be awesome.

Also, I can't remember if Baroness released their latest music in this year or 2007, but if it is 2008, they belong on the list as well.

If Dr. Dre would release his new album I could include some rap on here, but alas, that isn't going to happen, and Galactic's last album was 2007. So much for diversity.

Also, for those of you saying the new Opeth isn't very good, I think you seriously need to take another look at it. When I went to see them in concert they played Black Rose Immortal --> Blackwater Park --> Baying of the Hounds --> The first 4 songs of Watershed in a row. It just kept building and building and it was amazing. The album is not equal to Blackwater Park or Morningrise, but it is fucking good nevertheless.

ive never understood this. If i cant put a song on high without finding it shallow, trite, and boring...then i just dont like it.

you cannot be critical of peoples lists if you seriously liked Death Magnetic, Protest The Hero, and the new In Flames.
First off, I put classifications on both In Flames and Death Magnetic. Death Magnetic is definitely better than St. Anger, Load, Reload, Garage Inc., and the Black Album, it was their best stuff since Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets. Now, I could never expect them to equal those cd's again, so to come even close and to release their best effort since then gets them a spot on the list. As for In Flames, the music isn't awesome, and his voice is weird at times, but they're fun to listen to, no more, but with such a poor year of new music (relatively) I put them on there.

As for Protest, I don't see how you can say anything bad about them, they're one of the best new bands in a long time.
i found both of his chronic albums pretty bad.
Good for you, you're in the extreme minority. He's probably my favorite living rapper, and I still eagerly await the release.
the songs needed the energy and build up of good opeth songs to be enjoyable.
If the songs weren't good by themselves the build up would have been wasted. I mean, it's cool if you don't like the new stuff, but Opeth is so intricate and precise with their music, that there's a lot to listen to and if you reject it after a couple times through the cd you might be missing something.
