"Electronica" is an incredibly vague term. I think it's just a term used to umbrella any form of electronic music, because if you want to be picky about it, there are tons sub genres like house, industrial, trance, etc. But yes, I thoroughly enjoy electronic music, mostly trance. Favorites include Gabriel and Dresden, Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Dash Berlin, Above & Beyond, and a ton of random stuff that is just fun to listen to. If you want to explore some awesome electronic music that isn't very mainstream, check out the album "The Rorschach Suite," it has some great pieces. Oh, and Yppah, <3.

I was talking about the british meaning of electronica, which is basically dance music for the brain.

I would class trance as dance music, but its nice anyways :)

above and beyond are good, one of my favourite dubstep artists

this looks more promising, seeing as i don't like mainstream anyways :)

("album" by artist)
"the kruder &doftmeister sessions" by kruder & doftmeister
"druqs" by aphex twin
"dok springs" and "evacuation" by jemapur

Unfortunately, here in the US (especially in the music press) we still tend to use IDM - intelligent dance music - for the marker.

Breakcore is probably my favorite sub-style, although I also like the slightly more commercial stuff aswell, stuff that is sometimes called "downtempo". I especially like it if it has some sort of jazz or ambient influence.

Some of my favorites at the moment are Boards of Canada, Datach'i, Hrvatski and Squarepusher.

I tend to write this occasionally, and listen to it very occasionally. Ambient electronica is probably my favourite sub-genre to listen to, because it's a bit less full-on than some others.

Do minimal techno or microhouse fall under electronica? I have been liking that stuff recently.

Boards of Canada, Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Mouse on Mars, Prefuse 73, and Squarepusher. I also just got "I'm Happy, and I'm Singing, and a 1, 2, 3, 4" by Jim O'Rourke. It's, by my interpretation, an amalgamation of Mouse on Mars and Tim Hecker, with hints of Jim's past work. It's incredible.

Every time someone mentions Boards of Canada I read it as Beards of Canada. They should rename it to that instead. Anyway, here is a list of interesting stuff:

My Love Sees You - Beni
Clubbed to Death - Rob Dougan
Ride (Tiesto Remix) - Cary Brothers <333
Till The Sky Falls Down - Dash Berlin Also check out the vocal mix, it's lovely.
Dangerous Power (Cicada Full Vocal Mix) - Gabriel & Dresden Probably my favorite song ever.

And other stuff like Morcheeba, Moby, Justice, Daft Punk of course, Andy Moor, Shiny Toy Guns, Telepopmusik, Oakenfold.

Some good choices there, if you like squarepusher try listening to aphex twin, they're very similar :)
Also have a listen to autechre, they're a really fast tempo drill n' bass duo.

The aphex twin song is a little jazzy, so i think it encompassess most of your taste :)
Autechre

Massive attack and LCD soundsystem count, i haven't heard of crystal castle though, so i'll check em out :)

If you like LCD soundsystem check out: soulwax and the glimmers

I recommend Portishead if you like massive attack

Ambient electronica is cool, good for chilling (-_-)
Try to find the album "music for astronauts and cosmonauts" by howie b and Hubert Noi. The album consists of 7 tracks, most of which are about 20 minutes long. The album is the musical theme to an space journey, the idea for the record came when Howie B heard the Icelandic/Canadian astronaut Bjarni Tryggvason describing timings during a space mission in 1997.

Its very hard to find the album, but it is an absolute gem. It's very minimalist, and makes you feel like your floating through space :)

very trippy

of course :P

if you like aphex twin check out squarepusher (ignore the low quality video) and Autechre

Massive facepalm there. Massive.

I first listened to Aphex about 12 years ago, when Come to Daddy came out. Autechre soon after.

I like how you presume ignorance, it's a good quality to have.

(O.o)

You've misunderstood

I didn't presume ignorance, i just recommended something i thought you might like, there was no way of me knowing you'd heard of them.

I guess i talked down to you a littlle, and im sorry about that, but the fact that you used a sarcastic remark to point out my mistake, means i feel a hell of a lot less sympathetic, seeing as its a bit of a tw*tish thing to do...

Anyway, i still apologize for sounding like i was assuming ignorance.

Now, back to the discussion on music!!

I listen to Portishead. I hella' listen to Portishead.

What do you think about Third? I, like what I thought most people thought, think it's their best work, but Tanner and some other folk I spoke to were critical of it.

Im not that big a fan of trip hop personally, but i do <3 portishead

I personally think that "third" is portishead's best album because its not like anything i've heard before. There is a lot of contrast, which means the album is always great for a listen, because theirs a song for whatever mood your in :)

I can see why people could be critical, as the sound of third is quite different to their usual sound, and whenever a band trys something new, their are bound to be fans of their old stuff who think that it is terrible.

Favourite track is "small", i love the prog-rock sound of it :)

Funny... I thought I posted in this thread yesterday.

Personally, I can never get enough electronica. IDM, trance, dance, and pretty much any variation except generic techno is awesome IMO. I'd recommend xanopticon if you're into breakcore-ish stuff, and SGX is also a pretty cool electonic musician.

I'm a huge fan of Aphex Twin, and Daft Punk. I also love Vitalic, which comes close to this category in some regards (although they're a little closer to "unintelligent dance music" in same cases, and just beyond genre in others).

Whaaaa? You think Aphex Twin and Daft Punk sound the same? Dude, they don't even sound similar. Daft Punk is House/Dance. Aphex Twin is totally ambient with break elements. Do Justice and Boards of Canada sound the same as well? Get out of my house.

pay careful attention to the final part of my post, which involves an "x" and a "D" placed next to eachother, to create the effect of someone laughing like crazy.

That little subtle smiley, informs you that i was, in fact, joking.

You need to get your joke detector sorted out :P

Woah woah woah. Portishead and prog rock do not belong in the same sentence, except for in this sentence. I'm interested to know what you think prog rock is.

Also, electronica I enjoy includes: Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, some Zero 7, Prefuse 73, DJ Shadow. I'd class Eluvium and Stars of the Lid along with these guys in my head, but they're not electronica. Just ambient like the rest of 'em.
