So I never got a chance to discuss with anyone what they thought of Congratulations when it came out and I thought I'd try to change that.

Opinions?

I bought their last album, and was a bit disappointed. The main body of it was no where near as good as the singles. I've listened to a bit of Congratulations, but haven't bought it... and I don't think I will. It seems to be a lot like their last album, but with the good parts taken out. They seem to be taking a less electronica stance this time, which I don't think appeals to their talents.
Kids was an amazing song. They need to make more like that.

Also, did you know MGMT used to be called Management, but then shortened it when they found out the name was already taken? Just some fun trivia.

The singles from Oracular Spectacular were brilliant, but they moved away from that on Congratulations because it wasn't them and they didn't like that some people only listened because of those singles. That's why there's nothing like Kids or Time To Pretend there, which is disappointing. I'd agree that it's a lot like the first album without the good bits, but it's still a damn good listen.

Anyway, I saw them right after Oracular dropped and they were terrible live.

I found Congratulations boring. Oracular was different from Congratulations in the way that it was much more memorable. "Electric Feel" could come on, and you'd instantly know it was MGMT. Can't say the same for the new album.

Kids is fine as a single, but a whole album of it would be horrible. And I totally agree with Slappy, except adding that there's nothing wrong with it, especially considering their pop music wasn't horrible to begin with. It's a logical step for a band that listens to and enjoys that kind of music to create similar music.

They don't like that that is all some people associate with them. They often drop it from their live set too

I'm off the opinion that they are pretty dull and shit.

Maybe, but the press they've done along with the whole album indicates to me a conscious effort to move away from popular success to save their (made-up) artistic integrity.
