It's going to be 2D on a 2D background. The closet one is Condog, and this next comic may shed some light on some clues.I think they are meant to look 2D. I get the feeling this is going to be a 2D comic on a faux 3D background.

I'm sorry to say that a more correct analogy of phpBB is perhaps the timber the new forumers used to build their forums / houses. Instead of phpBB, you would be better off to use TheRealN.com as the lands of wonder.
That said, art is great, text is good, and hopefully this will go somewhere good!
