I have one in my MP3 player (custom mod b*tch!) and it is faster. A lot faster. Unfortunately it uses SATA 1 and not SATA 3, so it is much slower than it could be (the MP3 player has SATA 1, the actual SSD is made for SATA 3 and has eSATA and USB2 ports. Awesome thing.) Still prefer an actual hard disk because its cheaper for large amounts of space. Also, besides trying to conserve battery life in laptops, I don't see the purpose of getting an SSD in a desktop computer, much less in a gaming build. It would transfer files faster, sure, but it's damn expensive. I'd rather use the extra money for a new/better video card or more memory or larger hard disks, instead of one smaller SSD.

Having a lower seek time and higher transfer rates cuts down on load times. That is why you get an SSD. Besides, SSDs are becoming cheaper at an extremely rapid rate. I remember a year ago when they were $20 per GB and now they're a tenth of that.

Why are you picking nits? The point still stands.l'oeuvre wrote:$20 per GB if you were shopping at the wrong places... probably $15/GB a year ago.

And what exactly is a game doing while loading levels/textures/resources/etc? Transferring files (from HD to RAM)mediate wrote:It would transfer files faster, sure,
Well, yes, but so are diamonds, which don't transfer files very fast at allbut it's damn expensive
I think my 7.7 on the WEI says I don't need toI'd rather use the extra money for a new/better video card
I have 6 gigsor more memory
have 1.2 TB, only half of which is usedor larger hard disks
You know who else doesn't want to spend money on smaller SSDs? Starving kids in Africa. But I say we send them SSDs because they transfer files faster than food.instead of one smaller SSD.
Edit: my point-for-point reply looked assholish to me, so know that this was intended to transfer files be humorous

Hey, so some of you people seem like you know what you're talking about.
I need a new laptop hard drive, and I only have funds for either a conventional, disk-spinny hard drive or a hybrid drive.
Query: Are hybrid hard drives worth it? I'm looking at a 500 GB, 7200 rpm hybrid drive on newegg for $99 versus a 500 GB, 7200 rpm HDD for $69.

I'm going to agree with digits on this. You'd see better performance, but I don't think you'd see a 40% price increase worth of performance. Although if you have the extra cash, there isn't any particular downside to a hybrid.

Goddamn it .... I had a perfect (and humorous) post to post there as a response to the point-for-point reply above ... and the ISP got a DDOS attack a few seconds before posting it ... fml .......
I'm guessing you saw this hybrid? It looks good, but 7! was right. 4 GB of SSD will give you little increase. Go for a bigger standard disk-spinny one for the same price as the hybrid (plus shipping) if can, but it isn't worth the $30 increase for a hybrid.T̷s͢uk̕a͡t͜ư wrote:Hey, so some of you people seem like you know what you're talking about.

For future reference, if you hit submit on most forums under most browsers, and you get a 404 (or the page never loads), if you just hit back, you'll end up on the post creation page with your post fully in tact, where you can then copy/paste it elsewhere for when your internet unfucks.mediate wrote:Goddamn it ....
