Fuck that. My HTC Dream is more than good enough for the price.
That's how much the HTC Dream costs without a contract here.

Seriously? I don't know where you're living, but here in 'MERICA, it's $400 without a plan, or $170 with. I got it with the plan through T-Mobile.

In Canada, they're five without, and forty with a three year plan. About 170 with a one or two, though.

Look below.
Wikipedia wrote:As of 2008, in the US, it was priced starting at $149.99 for new and existing T-Mobile customers if purchased with a two-year T-Mobile voice and data plan, and $399 without a contract.
The iPhone 3G is cheaper than that. $99.00. And there's also a refurbished one for 49.00.

Some of the things that the Dream has do sound very good, but I'm not sure that that's just what I'm looking for in a phone. As it stands currently, I think that I would get the iPhone, but I am looking in on a couple other phones, but the Dream is not among them (mainly because I have AT&T, of course).

And, you know, without the bothersome phone part.

I don't have a phone. If I were to get one, I'd probably look at the HTC Dream. But then, I'm a cash-strapped university student, so getting any variety of smartphone is kind of out of my budget range.

You're skipping the fact that having the iPhone means paying an additional $30 a month.

I remember a discussion on some other messageboard about smartphones a while back where people were complaining about this or that phone feature not working on this or that phone. I think I recommended a "nokia something" and said I'm really not qualified to care since I don't do anything with a phone except make calls and listen to music.

At this point some dude who had spent the last five posts whining about his iPhone said "i want a phone that makes calls and plays music. Recommend me something."

I think the moral of the story is that most people buy whatever the hell they see in marketing copy and don't actually pay much attention to what the damned thing actually does, or what they want it to do. I always answered every "recommend me an x" question with "what do you want it to do" until about a month ago when I got tired of people staring blankly at me expecting me to read their fucking minds.

So get a goddamn nokia 5320 or 5530, assholes. Or move to a network that doesn't suck and wait for Motorola's "Droid".

The thing that I like about apple is that they make their products look shmexy. The I-phone is a sexy piece of electronic equipment, and I understand why your brother said that he wanted it in, on, and around his body.

If you're abandoning all consideration of function, Apple might as well have sold you a Christmas ornament.

Apple combines functionabilty that is good enough for the non-nerd, and awesome sexy shmexy looks.
It ain't just an ornament, but I like those.

Yeah, that's bullshit. I prefer the Microsoft ones that shatter if touched too enthusiastically and the Linux ones which require you to download twelve different tree structure libraries for them to hang correctly.

A) no-one knows. in reality, it's almost certainly lazy developers with a chronic behavioural problem where they eat their keyboard upon being asked to include support for something non-propriety.
B) apparently, if you want your phone to do EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO you have to pay through every orifice.

Sure, there's a huge variety of tree structure libraries to choose from and many of them might require some hacking to get working correctly, but they're all free and the end result is the most efficient and technically elegant ornament on the block (which can also run your web server if you feel so inclined). The beauty is often on the inside with Linux, but Macfags never shut up about how shiny their happy-clicky-GUI is, shallow bastards that they are.

Linux runs on everything, and Christmas ornaments are no exception.

Perhaps you should try Linux. It's a really nice looking OS. I think the difference is that it is less user friendly; you know, no gigantic buttons at the bottom, in case you lose your browser somewhere.

Heh, well, actually, I'm one of those regressive Linux users who prefers to use the console as much as possible. You could definitely describe my usual Linux usage as hideous on the outside, since it's just a black screen with panels of text. Sometimes there's color somewhere on the screen. Sometimes.
The exception is when I use Firefox, though, obviously. Otherwise, it's zsh, naim, irssi, mutt, and hell, mpg123 when I don't feel the need to manage my iPod.

The main thing that differentiates the Droid from the iPhone is really the existence of its keyboard. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to the customer. Also it has a fantastic ad campaign.

Their storage entry is misleading. HTC phones have SDHC slots, which currently scale up to 32 GB. It can also be noted that iPhones don't have any memory expansion besides what's built in.
