Nope. DX 11 is going to be for Windows 7, which is coming out soon enough for me that I won't ever need DX 10. Skippin' that shit right over.Techno wrote:You're going to need Directx 10 at one point.Skyflyer wrote:Vista sucks for gaming. If you're a gamer, get XP. Voice of experience speaking.

It sucks if you don't have a nice enough computer to compensate for the extra resources Vista hogs over XP, a friend of mine just built a fairly high end computer (~$1000 worth of shit) which has enough power to run 2 of most games at once, a(ny) game + vista isn't very taxing for his compSkyflyer wrote:Vista sucks for gaming. 2) Windows 7 drops the resource requirements a lot.
Word is out that MS will not be releasing a Beta version of 7 - the next release will be Release Candidate 1.

They did that with IE 8 too. First the beta and now the Release Candidate.jean-luc wrote:1) *ahem* DirectX10smartalco wrote:It sucks if you don't have a nice enough computer to compensate for the extra resources Vista hogs over XP, a friend of mine just built a fairly high end computer (~$1000 worth of shit) which has enough power to run 2 of most games at once, a(ny) game + vista isn't very taxing for his compSkyflyer wrote:Vista sucks for gaming. Hey Jean Luc, the Beta is out right now, but the RC1 will be the next stage, no Beta 2.
Vista has been fine for me and I actually regret not installing it over XP when I had to reformat my PC last year.

After the disaster of Vista, Microsoft really can't afford to mess up very much. To be honest, it's not that hard to fix to make a bit better anyway. I'm yet to see any significant advantages over XP though. Perhaps decent 64bit support? Then again, I didn't think 64 bit was that great on windows applications wise. <insert-witty-comment-on-how-linux-is-the-only-OS-with-64bit-flash-at-the-moment-here>
But truthfully, I hope they do improve, because when most of the computers in the world are running it, you would hope it's decent. Governments could at least have some competence when there are mission-critical computers to not use something unstable / unreliable.
Of course saying that, I only ever had 2 viruses in my usage of computers (involving a lot of under-the-table stuff.) I guess productivity on windows is partially based on the competence of the user after all ;)

This is kind of old, but I most comment:Tsukatu wrote:If y'all're talking about the Ctrl+Alt+[arrow] shortcut, then I sort of agree. I can see how it'd be useful for tablets, or for the rare instances where you're working on your computer upside-down, but I use those shortcuts to move between workspaces in Linux, so when I forget that I'm using Windows and use them, it's a minor annoyance to see that my screen is rotated instead.
Some people (including me) have LCD monitors that rotate on their stands to portrait orientation. This is awesome on widescreen monitors for working with typesetting or really any kind of paper documents, because you can fit a full page on the monitor at once without zooming out. The keyboard shortcuts are awesome if you rotate your monitor back and forth a lot. There are also people (me, again, and surely others) that set their laptops on the side for working with documents.

By the way, I find that using alt+q / w / a /s (that is, for you qwerty layout people) far better for changing between my virtual desktops ;)

Yup, 7 is expected to RTM on the 13th July. Also I'm going to be in the upgrade plan so that when I get my Uni laptop, I can get a free upgrade to the respective version of 7.

Yanni, if you buy any computer (In theory) between June 26th and December 30th 2009, you are eligible for a free upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (Respective versions, I.E. Home Premium to Home Premium, Ultimate to Ultimate, Business to Professional). Example is the Dell Studio 15, which is eligible for the upgrade.
RTM = Release to Manufacturing (They start boxing it up and shipping to retailers).

Yay Windows 7 has finally RTM'd. The build is 7600.16385 and it hit RTM yesterday (July 22).
But remember, anyone discussing how to obtain this via torrents will get warned as this is the version that ships in shops, it isn't a Beta anymore and is considered piracy.
