The Best Antivirus Software (re-vote please!)

Posted: 2009.05.02 (02:58)
by Neil_Bryan
In your opinion, what's the best Antivirus software? I set up a poll to find out.

If your best antivirus software (in your opinion) is not on the list, just pick others.

Also, after you vote on the poll, you MUST reply to this topic, stating what antivirus software you chose as best and why.

EDIT: Added AVG, enable revoting and that's it. Vote again, please!

Avast, but they're kind of redundant on all the modern operating systems if you have some idea what you're doing.

I use COMODO Anti-virus + Firewall.

Never gotten a virus. It's free too.

Why isn't AVG an option?

Haven't wrote that on the list because I forgot.

Question: can I edit a poll? I can't see an edit button there.

NOD32. Although I have McAfee Virus Scan 4.0 on this... yes the really old one.

I had AVG but I kept ending its processes each time I'd start up... So technically I didn't have any AV running (past tense because I ultimately uninstalled it).
I don't download suspicious stuff, and I haven't had a single virus. Hooray. Then I started dual booting into Ubuntu 9.04.

I've used Norton, Kaspersky, Avast, and AVG. Of all of them, I'd have to say Kaspersky was best.

McAfee higher than Norton?! Blasphemy!

Of all the antiviruses I've had, Norton '09 works the best for me (I hate the previous versions of Norton). It takes up very little resources (less than 20MB of RAM, if I'm looking at the right processes), and it gets very frequent updates (every 15 minutes or so, but they don't mess around with performance).

Even if I created this poll, I should answer too, right? I say Kaspersky. It's a great type of software and does not take up a lot of disk space.

I'm trying out the Panda Cloud Antivirus and am very impressed thus far.
The client is lightweight, taking a mere 16mb of RAM on our test system—and while it caches a copy of the definitions for offline use, it doesn't seem to take much drive space either. We've not had a chance to test the software against real malware—in our testing it quickly found and eliminated a bunch of spy cookies, but it's refreshing to see new innovation in the boring world of virus killing.

You linked to Symantec's site to prove that Norton is the best. Bias-fail.

I forgot to reply, sorry.

I chose avast!, despite using AVG on my own PC. This is because I recently installed it on my dad's laptop, and it's far less obtrusive than McAfee, which he was previously using, and I even think it's better than the AVG I'm using myself. I'm just too lazy to switch AV programs.

Norton 2009.

So many improvements it's unbeliveable.

Then try to write http://www.norton.com to address bar, stupid.

2 things:
One - I could just press F6, type norton and press Ctrl+enter.
Two - That wasn't my point. I meant that you used testimonials from -Norton's- site to prove that -Norton- is better than the rest.

Anyways-
I recently switched from COMODO (anti-virus, kept firewall) to Avast. I'm really amazed at how much Avast has improved since the last time I used it (which was several months ago). It's definitely not as resource heavy as it's competitors.

Is Avast really the best? Does take up too much space? And also, does it have pop-up warnings every time?

If you answer yes to Q1 and No to Q2 and Q3 Avast really is the best.

AVG, because it's free. I'm always careful with my downloads, so it's really just there for the sake of it.

AVG. It completely slows down your computer (like, a LOT) when it does it's weekly (or however you set it's schedule. I actually think it's daily by default but that's a bit overkill), but otherwise, when it's just running normally it has very minimal effect on your computer speed, and it's pretty good at catching things right away. Also, it's free.

When I worked at the Democratic Party we bought Kaspersky licenses in bulk, so all of our machines were packin' the K. I really liked the software, it seemed to have little performance impact and it was easy to use, and Kaspersky always does well in testing.
At home I dislike paying for things, so I use Avast! for on-access protection and run regular scans with ClamWin.
