Question for the Mac experts

I have a previous generation Macbook, the plastic white one with the glossy screen. It's got 10.4.11 installed and decent insides.
It ran like an African olympian when I first got it, now it's as slow as a sloth on a sugar crash.
It's got 64 gigs of hard drive space left and I don't leave programs running in the background.
Is there anything I can do to speed the thing up?

You could have some random startup processes or something. On mine, installing the HP printer drivers/utilities for the printer at my house actually installed 5 different background processes, one of which decided to eat up half my CPU time doing literally nothing useful. Check the activity monitor to see what is eating up your resources.

At those specs, I would suggest you limit it to 40 processes or under. ... OR under 10% CPU usage when idling.
