I'm sure many of you are aware of OS X and Linux's multiple desktop/workspaces feature. I found this neat freeware app called "VirtuaWin" which lets you do the same on Windows... highly customizable and resource friendly

You know, I used to wish this feature was more prevalent on Windows, but then it struck me...
when I'm on Linux, with schmancy keyboard and mouse gestures for switching workspaces and the whole deal, I don't use them. At all. I never leave workspace 1.

Maybe it's just a usage pattern, but I honestly find that I have never found a good reason to use more workspaces. it might be a result of what I call "window claustrophobia" - if I have too many windows open, I have to tidy up or it really bothers me.

I can't stand using Windows after a long time of Linux use because I can't divide my many Windows in a pleasing way. I'm too used to having chat clients and multiple terminals up at a time that Alt-Tabbing through everything is just frustrating.

After a year of using OS X with Spaces (on my laptop), I still never used them. And now with gaming PC, I have enough screen space I don't care.

When I was confined to Linux for a time, I really enjoyed this feature, and how easy it was to use. But back on Windows, especially with my dual monitor system set up again, I find almost no need to do this because I use my second monitor like I'd use a second workspace - and I rarely have more than 6 or 8 windows open anyway, so it doesn't get too clustered.

Still, I may keep this in the back of my mind. If I upgrade to a computer with a decent amount of RAM, it could be good to use.

I find workspaces very useful on my netbook, where I have UbuntuNR, but as my Windows 7 desktop has a big enough screen, I don't have any problems with it. The taskbar helps.


The alt-tab on Windows is sooo horrible and confusing when compared to the window switcher I have on here, the ring switcher.
