I've just got some info back on how my laptop's doing, since i sent it to my dad's favorite firm to get repaired about a week ago. Basically, it was screaming at me like a banshee, and we couldn't fix the fan even hoovering all of the dust out of the casing. So i sent it in to my dad's favorite firm.
Turns out they've stripped the laptop down to the circuit boards, and they can't find any solution. What's more, they doubt they'll able to preserve or transfer any of my data over to a new laptop. Moral of the story, get a desktop so shit like this doesn't happen. But is there any way my data could be restored to a new computer, or is the firm just bullshiting? I'm not particularly tech savvy, as you might have guessed.
Erm... Shit.

Tell them you want everything back, in tacked, and threaten not to pay (assuming they are going to charge you for even looking at it) if the HD looks tampered with. All you need is the appropriate cable type and another computer to hook it to.

Absolutely ludicrous. Unless your computer has some sort of flash based memory, which is fucking unlikely but maybe you live in the future.

I've haven't really put a whole lot of trust into computer repair shops ever since I worked in one. The people who will probably try to fix your laptop are not any better at it than your nerdiest friend, but they'll happily charge you out the ass for it all the same. You can recognize when your computer is being worked on by tards if you send it in with an issue that's not at all relevant to the hard drive but they tell you that your data will probably be lost somehow anyway. Like, unplug hard drive and put a $5 10-gigger in there with a free OS, and you're guaranteed not to lose the customer's data, not to mention be better able to isolate where the problem is. Shit is not difficult.
