Okay, off to college in a few months, and I'm not looking for a laptop. I've got it narrowed down to these two here - Asus N61JV-X2 and HP Pavilion Dv6-2190.

I just need one that runs fast, being able to run Photoshop, and some gaming (Mostly Source games, although newer games on low/med settings would be nice). Battery life isn't a huge issue, but I think Asus wins in that case with the Optimus technology.

I'm still open to other choices where the price is <$1050, so yeah. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks.

That seems fine, I'm not too demanding on the gaming. Just running TF2 is fine, to be honest. I'll be watching lots of movies on here, so that's key as well.

Also, Inspired, does the Dv6 get a lot of fingerprints on it fast?

HP laptops are loaded with shovelware, and have whopping great jet engines strapped to the side of them. Unless you plan on using it on a desk in an icy cold room, and enjoy hearing nothing except WHIRRRRRR, go for something else. *glares at screen* *imagines glaring at past laptop*

That said, it works a charm. If you've got music on all the time, and it's not on your lap, no worries. Just be prepared to waste the first few days uninstalling.

LF: I don't think he wants a 9 pound brick.

I kind of don't want to go with an Alienware, and I don't like the 11.6" screen - too small.

I'm still leaning toward the Asus, as I know more about the quality than I do about the Lenovo.

Lenovo/IBMs are durable and last quite a while.

Dell Studio XPS 16. <3 Seems that the cheapest model can't be upgraded to a Core i5, but subscribe to their email newsletter and they send out 5%/10% discount codes with each newsletter so it's worth looking at that.

NEVER recommend a Dell. Ever. They're really not good at all. Sure, every other business/school uses them, but their support sucks, they put tons of shit on your computer, and their parts really don't last more than 1-2 years anymore. My cousin got a Dell laptop for college and the processor died on her within 4 months.

Tons of shit != 3 programs, one necessary to use the multimedia keys.
Support isn't needed if you take care of your computer
I have a 5 year old PC that only had the RAM fail
All other Dells we've had have had no failures so far.

Actually, in my experience, Dell is one of the better OEM builders. Although their support does suck giant monkey balls if something does go wrong.

Mhm. Quality has declined a little in recent years, though. If you're really set on a laptop, I've heard Toshiba's Satellite series is excellent and seems to have slipped into the void IBM left behind when they sold the ThinkPad line to Lenovo. Here's a $900 i7:

I never see anyone voice an opinion about Fujitsu laptops on this forum. My general impression if that they're really good if a bit on the pricey side.

My mother had a Fujitsu tablet for a while, but she changed jobs and had to return it. It was pretty cool, sturdy. Not sure how much that helps.

I had a Fujitsu (Siemens) desktop PC once. Really strong and good stuff, it lasted whole 8 years, suffering punches and kicks (physically, and yes, I really do mean punches and kicks) and hard damages to the motherboard.

Okay, I've been looking for laptops for a while now, with Pavel helping me.- My criteria was a 17in laptop, for around 1000€, and the laptop which looks the best I found yet is an Asus N71JQ.

So now I'm posting here to ask you guys if you think if this is a good choice or if there are better choices for the same price.

edit: I've been looking around for other choices, and I've found an Asus K72JR and a Sony E-Series (both portuguese sites - also the price is wrong on the Sony. it actually costs 800€). There's also the HP dv6t Select Edition or something which looks rather cool too.

Also, the purpose for it will be modelling in sketchup / autocad.
So yeah, help please.

Hey! I'm typing on this laptop right now!

The main thing about it is it's LCD screen and sound. 16 inch 16x9 with speakers on both sides of the keyboard, plus the touch sensitive music buttons make this a media powerhouse. I love this so far, but I think we look for different things. I just browse, listen to music, and watch the occasional movie. No games are played on it that require more than N or Quadradius.

Food for thought if you were considering this.

Whatever you do, don't get a shitty resolution. It's the last thing you should skimp out on. I'm on a 14.5" screen with 1600x900 as a resolution and its freakin' beautiful. The other option was 1366x768 on the same size. Completely ugly.

I can't fathom why you'd pay 800 Euro for something with a Core i3 in it. Find something stateside for the same price with an i7, a 7200 RPM hdd, and a better graphics card.

Good. There are a ton of laptops out there that are 15-17" with 1366x768... totally wastes such a large screen.
