For all of you interested in computer security, you'll be amused to know that a Dr. Thorsten Schneider has built an extremely vulnerable distribution of Linux for use as a learning tool.
The latest version is DVL 1.5: "Infectious Disease". It's available as a 1.7 GB ISO downloadable here:

Clue is in the very first clause of the very first sentence of the OP.

I meant who else, of course.

Hilarity aside, I might grab this at the end of the month when my cap's run out anyway, I've always loved the satisfaction of some random exploit working as it should. Cheers for the link, in any case.

Or we could combine the two, for added tension!

Considering the relatively small percentage of users on any kind of Linux distro, the even smaller percentage of those users on DVL, and the even smaller-er percentage of people willing to search out those DVL users
just to exploit people who know that they're open to exploitation... that'd be one
hellish nightmare of a dry spell.

"It contains older, easily breakable versions of Apache, MySQL, PHP, and FTP and SSH daemons."
It's not a matter of creating a crack specifically for the OS at all. That's really not the way to take advantage of an insecure machine. Generally, you do it by exploiting a weakness in a third party app which then gives you fuller access to the system.

Except for all those viruses aimed at a win32 system, those ones are pretty useless against linux, but I suppose they aren't targeted for the most part, where as an ssh attack most definitely should be.
