7zip can do everything winrar can and it's open source. Why would you ever choose winrar?

For some reason my computer was never able to handle transitioning from 7zip to winrar.

Because it's software that you're meant to buy, but you can get for free. It's like choosing between two indie games on Steam. One has always been free, and the other was $10 and is now free. You'd choose the second one, because if it was worth money then it must be better.Duchess of Awesome wrote:7zip can do everything winrar can and it's open source. Why would you ever choose winrar?

WinRAR is popular in the scene because they've been using it since before 7zip existed; as I recall using WinRAR is still part of the scene rules. It's also popular with stupid kids who want to pretend they're badass hackers (a group that once included me) and so they do anything the scene does.
.7z files can be appended to .jpg files in the same way as .rar files, so jpg/rar is not a real excuse to use WinRAR, but some people don't know that you can jpg/7z. It's a nice trick for transferring files via image hosts.

I simply hadn't thought of it at the time but many of my decisions have been modified within the last two years alone.Duchess of Awesome wrote:7zip can do everything winrar can and it's open source. Why would you ever choose winrar?

7zip is better.
But I'm too lazy to install it and so I just use WinRAR (and I haven't bought it, so every time I open it, It asks me for my license. I click cancel.)

The ultimate battle of motivation... clicking install once vs clicking cancel every time you open it.lfaber wrote:7zip is better.

7-Zip. No nags, faster, and looks better.

Once winRAR, always winRAR.
