Dead Pixels - A Ghost Story in 2D

Looking for coders, artists, and animators for a 2D gaming project. Either full on team members, or just advice on where to start. I'm at the concept stage currently, scripting the story, designing the characters, and imagining the gameplay mechanics.

Here are some examples of the art:

These are the very first designs for the game. I want retain the 8-bit aesthetic but with slick animation and design.

I'm contimplating a pixelated cell-shading, or a similar technique (think a simplified Viewtiful Joe, perhaps), to give the simple sprites some depth.

I also want to add a tonne of situational animations to really make the characters appear alive. So, for example, being burned by fire or falling on spikes will produce two very different damage animations.

I'm also contemplating a Paper Mario design, but while that would work immediately, I'd rather not be so derivative.

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

ARTISTS: I'd like some concept art for further characters or the development of existing. Any medium is fine for the concept stuff, I'll translate it to pixels myself (unless you fancy giving it a go).

I'm using a combination of MS paint and this nifty app: http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/

Feel free to dig in however you want for now. I'll send out specific tasks/requests once I get a feel for the thing.

PROGRAMMERS: I'd like some suggestions for which language to use. This is the part I'm most clueless about, so I'll be doing some research, but I'll mostly be relying on you guys to guide me.

Do you need to know anything specific about the game before you choose a language?

IDEAS PEOPLE: Once posted, feel free to pick apart/build upon any of my gameplay and story ideas. In depth critiques where possible please.

If any of you would like to get involved, mail me for more details.

From the art, this looks pretty cool. You mind sharing the basic storyline/player motivation?

My friend is a kick-ass pixel artist. Here's a piece of his work:

I think he does some 8-bit stuff too, I'll see if I can get him to work with something if you're interested.

That is one awesome picture, especially for pixel-drawn.

I'd not be a very good animator (and an even worse coder), but I'd be more than happy to contribute with ideas and such, or music if need be.

What cute characters!
I think you said something along these lines in the OP but I reckon the critter charaters need shading as well, they look awkwardly two dimensional next to the larger characters.

If you haven't already, be sure to join some of the indie game sites, they should definately be able to help you with your game

Have you ever done programming before? because game maker is the easiest program to use, but lacks performance and adaptability. Python is probably the best to go with, but consider your human resources first.

I've been told Python is a good-un.

We're recording our new EP atm, so this was a a little ill timed; I'll get back on it when I have some free time.

In the meantime, any offers of help will be noted and I'll PM when the foundations are laid.

Good work, Blackson. Very helpful for those of us who can't scroll up.

By the way, when's our Quadradius game?

I was stating that he couldn't contribute. And I've given up on the contest, only about 3 people actually tried to play their games and abide by the deadlines. I can't run a contest with nobody willing to get their games done.
