nreality preview

future nreality release preview here

as most of you may be aware, i've started doing development on nreality

i will try to compile and make available preview builds regularly to show off and test things, instead of releasing possibly breaking versions.
i'm adopting a new version numbering system, X.Y.Z, X is the major version, Y is the minor version, and Z is the patch version.
odd-numbered minor versions (7.1.x, 7.3.x, 7.5.x...) will be unstable releases and demo/score submission disabled, they are for trying out new features and testing for bugs.
even-numbered minor versions (7.2.x, 7.4.x, 7.6.x...) will be stable releases with demo/score submission enabled
if you come across any bugs, please report them.

  • fixed highscores from being unable to be saved (oops again)
  • nreality drones
  • preparing nreality for different codebase
[7.1.4]
  • fixed highscores from being unable to load (oops)
  • fixed highscores table from being hidden
  • re-enabled right-click menu for all you "show all" players
[7.1.3]
  • fixed deselect button from flashing when resetting maps
  • fixed deselect button from showing after exiting boss mode
  • fixed nmaps.net link from being shown over numa demos
  • fixed episode numbers shifting positions when coming back to the screen after watching a nreality/metanet demo
  • internal, more code organization

  • columns added directly into nreality, no longer ships with separate column files
  • fixed invisible button on top of screen
  • sidebar buttons now show up in the editor
  • menu bar hidden like in n1.4
[7.1.1]
  • fixed boss mode tab q'ing. this time for real
  • deselect hidden when playtesting
  • legit mode indicator should only appear now when legit mode is on
[7.1.0]
  • massive level loading speedup
  • editor button on main menu for new-user friendly access to map creation
  • "deselect" button now added to the main editor screen to avoid typing letters into your map or demo data
  • ned help toggle, hides the help text by default so it doesn't obscure your map
  • boss mode Q button has been removed and disabled, no more tab-qing your maps
  • episode list on play game screen has been spaced out
  • nreality sidebar toggle buttons have been moved to the screens where they are applicable, and now show a toggled state
  • nmaps link has been updated

any feature requests not including new enemies or tiles, strictly game client related things, please feel free. the code base is just not at a point where adding new entities is practical

The sped-up loading time is possibly the best mod I never knew I wanted. I love it!
The reflex of pressing backslash is pretty ingrained by now so I probably won't switch to using the editor button any time soon, but it is a good thing to have, I'm sure. Maybe there could be a main menu button on the Ned main screen?
I like how you've laid out the sidebar buttons. It's a much better font/size.

Here's some bugs I've come across so far on the Mac version:
-the DESELECT button in Ned stays visible when I'm playtesting.
-I've definitely just boss-key+q'd v7.1 (I've had boss-mode key set to esc for a while now EDIT: I just set boss-key to tab and tab+q'd successfully again).
-speaking of tab+q-style potential disasters, when I go to another program and start to type, NReality still registers keypresses for a while. I've accidentally cleared maps and unpaused demos this way and left Ned and entered Ned. Nothing terrible yet, but I'm sure I'll lose a potential map-of-the-year-in-progress one of these days... this also happens with v7.0 but I figure I'd mention it here anyhow

I don't know if these are bugs or what:
-sometimes there appears to be a button on the very top of the screen covering the entire "tiles" border
-I don't know what I did exactly, but when I was toggling boss mode, I somehow enabled legit mode?

I'm really glad you're bringing new features to NReality and I can't wait to see what else you'll do with it!

many thanks though the only thing I've noticed is that when playing user made levels the grid, time, state, demo and previous disappear.

I know that it is a small thing.

fixed these

there is now a small bug that will be fixed in 7.1.3, the deselect button flashes when resetting maps in non-editor levels

-in Userlevels, sidebar buttons show only while map loads
-this is super minor, possibly not a bug, but it's possible to toggle help when in playtesting mode. if nothing else, it could be slightly confusing if done by accident while FBFing a demo

EDIT: the new abnormal speed screen is beautiful.

Thanks sidke, for everything. Some really cool stuff in 7.1.2, and it runs a lot smoother than 7.

However, two weird things:

1. When I'm playing and I die, what I think is the editor menu flashes on the screen for a split second - the only thing I can make out is the deselect button, so I'm guessing it's that. Not game-breaking, but probably not intentional, and it can get a bit annoying.

2. I can't submit scores. I got a 218f-speedrun on 77-4, which would definitely be on the boards, but I clicked submit and it didn't show up. (There is a run of mine there now, but I made that with v7).

actually i hadn't thought of being able to download files, i'll have to investigate how flash can do this it might not actually be able to, so worst case is i'll try to make a folder you can put many userlevels files into and select which to load from

just posting to let people know a goal i had was to be able to play n from within a browser screen, so you could easily play maps wherever but that turned out to be impossible metanet put like 16 checks all over the n1.4 code to make sure the file was being played locally otherwise redirect to their site. one of them gets called before i can inject any code, so it's impossible as far as i can tell unless i can ask politely to have a non-drm n1.4 to work with.

Big problem for me. While playing in highscore mode, if I improve my personal best, it isn't saved.

Gameplay is still rough on my janky laptop, but good goodness do I love the visible editor. (And the sidebar buttons look great.)

EDIT: Ummm, looks like that includes userlevels. :c

thank you for your diligence, it was a similar issue as the highscores not loading. will be released as fixed in 7.1.5

I have a suggestion I've always wanted: how about being able to change the playing mode by clicking on the label on the side? Rather than having to go to config menu and all that waste of time.

Also, there's an error that was already there in NReality: While on the main menu, the ep-level number on the bottom doesn't show on the very first demo that's replayed, neither it does on the very first demo after having previously been in highscores mode (which as we know, resets the current demo being played, unlike userlevels menu, for instance).

that's something i wanted to put in, but i think a logical reason why it's on a different screen is that you can't change the mode while on a highscores screen, or change it before submitting a demo. having it on a separate screen prevents any strange logic from happening regarding loading or submitting demos.

the first part may be something i can't fix, but i'll try. i think it has to do with n loading before code can be injected but i will see what i can do.
the second part i may need some elaboration to understand the steps to recreate it

just for the sake of saving sanity of people, could you explicitedly add "beta" to unstable/neutered versions? Or at least bring up a big text like "yo, submitting is disabled in this version" instead of failing silently

okay i have done so, the unstable versions have a notification on the top of the game screen that can be removed
