Letterman handled the entire situation very well. He didn't glorify it. He came clean. He doesn't justify what he did.
It was consistently impossible to determine if he was using his brand of Newhartian drypan or being sincere--like most geriatric Americans that watch the show, I had to use the studio audience response as my cue.
