With the resurrection of this old thread I note I never reported back regarding the recommendations, so... the only one from this thread that I actually got and read was krusch's rec, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, which is indeed fantastic and got me into Murakami. I considered Slappy's rec, Inherent Vice, but decided if I was going to read Pynchon I might as well read Gravity's Rainbow. I haven't read Gravity's Rainbow. Occasionally I do open it to a random page and have a look around and enjoy it. I might check out Inherent Vice again, though.
