A recent film should have been released in cinemas no more then 18 months ago, a not so recent film should have been released no less then 18 months ago.

I liked Wall.E and Resident evil apocalypse

I'd have to say Wall-E is my favourite recent film, as well as the best film ever, in my opinion.

In recent films... I found Horton Hears A Who to be quite emotional (I get touchy with these 'child-like' things). Twilight was very good, too. And Stardust, which I recently watched, was very good. I think that's about it for recent films, though.

My favorite recent films are covered in the top ten of 2008 topic, but so far as non-recent goes:

A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Oddessy, The Big Lebowski, Gerry, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Requiem For a Dream, Eraserhead, Mulholland Dr., The Life Aquatic, American Beauty, Eternal Sunshine..., Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Alphaville, Memento, Aliens, The Machinist, Rosemary's Baby, A Shot In The Dark, Apocalypse Now.

That about covers it. Basically anything -not- directed by Brian de Palma.

Not recent:

Aliens, Alien, Blue Velvet, Buffalo 66, La Belle Et La Bette, Brick, Spirited Away, Fight Club, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Dark City, LOTR trilogy, etc...

Basically anything -not- directed by Michael Bay.

Fight Club and the LotR movies were good.
However, Animal House is the best movie ever made.

Also Dazed and Confused.

I really liked Yes Man, but not much else recently.

As for not-so-recent, Be Kind Rewind, Dan in Real Life, and The Truman Show. I have a thing for movies that make you laugh as well as really hit you in the face as a beautiful piece of work. You don't really expect Jack Black, Steve Carrell, and Jim Carrey (respectively) to do that, but hey...

I want to see Synecdoche, New York but I can't find it anywhere.

I just watched Oldboy (2003).

This is a Korean film with English subtitles and my god was I impressed. It was a deep, complicated and confusing story that slowly explains itself bit by bit, which left me in awe. The acting was superb and I don't know what else to say, other than watch it.

They're remaking it, WITH WILL SMITH!

Ah so it seems. That would be...interesting. I think it would be a real stretch for Will Smith to play such a role though. :/

EDIT: I've also just watched The Pianist. It was pretty long, and I'm not much a fan of war films anyway, but this was a well made film that carried some real emotions home.
