Recommend me an anime!

Anyone know many good animes? I've gotten into a bit of a phase recently, but I don't know which series to start

to give you an idea of what I like, here's all/most anime series i've watched, and my thoughts on them:
  • Neon Genesis: Evangelion - Just finished it. I found it entertaining enough until it got to the end, I was hoping more of a big reveal of the angels and all the unknowns presented, but
    bit of a spoiler

the way that it almost ignored the story and went into the minds of the characters etc. threw me.

I liked the strength of the characters, felt the ending was unsatisfying, and the action scenes were often just okay.
  • Cowboy Bebop - Characters were alright, I felt like while their past was explored in an intriguing way, the characters themselves were not really fleshed out too much. Setting was nice, not so much that I love space based things or whatever, but the way that they presented the setting moreso was well done, and I enjoyed that. Additionally, I don't think there was enough of an underlying storyline, the more serious past-based story constructed with the flashbacks and all contrasted the overall lightheartedness of the individual eps, and as it only was referenced occasionally (ignoring the end), it felt kind of thrown in there.
  • Tora Dora - Likeable characters, three dimensional enough to be satisfying to watch. Setting of highschool etc was all quite plain, but the storyline was constructed nicely enough, and as I said the characters were pretty good, so despite the slightly bland topic of highschool relationships, it was entertaining. Especially seeing as how the underlying story was always a fairly big part of the individual eps.
  • Samurai Champloo - Fairly two dimensional characters, made up by some good humour, and overall style. The hip-hop based soundtrack was perfect. The underlying story seemed chucked in again, referenced only occasionally up until the end. having said that, the end was extremely satisfying. I liked the sword based fighting, maybe slightly preferable for me than guns/robots etc.
  • Bleach/Naruto - Don't remember either well enough to say much about them, lost track of both around the 110 ep mark. I did enjoyed the lightheartedness of naruto, and the fighting scenes weren't terrible. Bleach-wise, I liked the otherworldly..ness.. thing. to it. Same reason why I loved the angels in Evangelion. I like that kind of spirit-y stuff I reckon. Both had far too many fillers, and both went on for far too long, I reckon I prefer 25-40 eps.
  • Death Note - Watched, but don't remember well enough, saw mostly all of it but then the end got ruined by my mate -.-
  • One Piece - Watched on and off on TV a few years ago, seen too much to get into from start, but don't remember it too well.
  • Dragonball (Z/GT) - Again, watched on TV years ago, so can't rewatch it, but can't remember it.
-----------------------

Yeah. Any ideas based on that?

Points that must be covered or I probably won't get into it =

-no massive series eg. naruto/bleach. Under 100 eps preferable, under 50 eps even more preferable

-I'm generally for lightheartedness over serious stuff, but character strength/development and story development is still very important, just not so much into serious drama-y things

-action's good. more one on one combat than guns and robots, but the latter is alright too

Sorry about this being all convoluted, but... hopefully one or two of you can still help me out

Reemphasis on Paranoia Agent and everything else by Satoshi Kon, everything by Miyazaki (my favorites are Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away), FUNimation version of Shin Chan, English dub of Lupin III, Mind Game, Tekkonkinkreet.

I second Ghost in the Shell SAC. It's not so much light-hearted as it is casual, in that there's no heavy gut-wrenching drama or anything but there it doesn't aim to be silly or funny. It's highly philosophical, too, so this is an excellent series to watch if you like thinking. There are two seasons to the SAC series.

I'm only 10 episodes or so into Code Geass, but I'd recommend it. Highly.

Also, I'm a fan of CLAMP's work, so I'll make an obligatory plug for Cardcaptor Sakura, Kobato, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (WARNING: you have to read a little manga/plot summary to get the end of the story, but it's still pretty good and the OVAs are really something). If you're going to watch Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, I suggest watching CCS first. If you're going to watch Kobato, it helps to be familiar with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle for the one episode where they cross over.

Also, if you're looking for something silly, Hayate No Gotoku made me laugh.

Why can't you rewatch it? I watched DBZ on TV years ago and I'm in the process of rewatching it right now. You'd be surprised with how entertaining it is, despite having seen it (long) before.

Fullmetal Alchemist - My favorite anime for characters.
Paranoia Agent
FLCL/Fooly Cooly - plain awesomeness. Only six episodes, it would be dumb not to watch this.
Great Teacher Onizuka

Cyber City Oedo 808 (Only three episodes, but pulpy and instant and enjoyable if a little silly)
The second attempt at the Guyver anime (trashy, but fun)

Second what Yahoozy suggested.

This has been sitting around and waiting for me to watch it for, like, three months now. I've only seen the first episode, but it did interest me.

I really liked Lain: Serial Experiments. Great series, really hard to follow, but full of amazing images if you're into visuals. Some interesting philosophical food for thought involved as well. It's about the internet. :)

I'll throw in another voice suggesting Ghost in the Shell SAC.

And Nausicaa is by far my favourite Miyazaki.

Also Akira is awesome.

thanks for all the suggestions :) I'm gonna start fullmetal alchemist seeing as I was already a little interested and the promise of good characters is nice. I'll get onto the others soon too. Most probably paranoia agent due to all the recommendations as well. Curious about Code Geass as well. Also probably ghost in the shell, although I'm not sure it's right for me, everyone seems to like it too much for me to not give it a go. Also, I think I watched Fooly Cooly a while ago, I'll probably rewatch sometime soon.

thanks again everyone.

The thing about GHOST in the SHELL is that it is really not at all like what it should be, by description. It's more like reading Holmes and smoking Meth than Robot Anime Law and Order.

GHOST in the SHELL is ... more like reading Holmes and smoking Meth

Your welcome, did you see the homunculus that was part daughter and dog? God that was creepy and sad.

Also, I didn't see anyone mention it, But Trigun is really good.

If you're after a good anime film, Ninja Scrolls is a great old-school one.

Ah I got one for you. Yu Yu Hakasho.

Also Inuyasha.
And after that massive Naruto filler... Shippuden is friggin intense.

Yeah you seem to be starting with the kinds of anime most people know... so just work your way from there and see if you develop an individual taste.

I've still only actively started seriously watching anime in the last few years so you'll need other opinions but I'll be around!

EDIT: Oh I didn't even watch Trigun yet. (I have a long way to go)

Finished it today. REALLY good. Highly recommend it to everyone else as well.
rocket_thumped wrote:Also, I didn't see anyone mention it, But Trigun is really good.
Finished it a little under a week ago (I'm speeding through these haha), it wasn't bad, fairly lighthearted fun, end was underwhelming though, and there were many occasions where the main char (Vash) got emotional to the point of stupidity. Like in one particular episode where he meets a guy, the guy doesn't like him at all at first, then by the end of the ep likes him before dying, then Vash screams out his name going like "no! [person]" or something similar while weeping. There were other occasions similar as well. It was alright though.

Also I watched Highschool of the Dead. Trashy as anything, and heaps really annoying and unnecessary upskirts and boob jiggles and whatever (haha...), but ignoring that, it was entertaining, and well animated. A solid show.

Also, on a non anime note. I watched Dexter season 5. Continues to impress. Even after 5 seasons they manage to make following the life of a serial killer captivating, in no small part due to the acting of the recently divorced Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter in particular.

Oh, and yeah I finished Full Metal Alchemist ages ago. or like. 2 weeks ago haha, while the end was slightly underwhelming, overall the series was so much fun, one of my favourites. I'm not sure whether to watch FMA: Brotherhood or not. I'll wait for a while anyway.

I'm not sure what I'm gonna watch next, maybe Baccano! or Ghost In The Shell SAC. My friend has recommended Gantz so I might try that.

Thanks again everyone, I'll keep you updated (if i remember to haha)

If you want to watch an entire series where emotional stupidity runs the show and common sense is abused and neglected, watch Fate Stay Night.

I've never watched Gantz, but I thought it was hentai, or at the very least the fan service was pervasive.

gantz has my favorite kind of fan service. that is gratuitous blood and gore and death
i loved it and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind trying to not get attached to characters or gratuitous blood and gore and death
and then after or around watching this one, watch bokurano

edit: i am watching gantz again now :3

Yeah, might stick away from Gantz for now then. While I don't mind a little blood and gore, heaps is :/ and I like getting attached to chars a lot.

anyone been following Shinrei Tantei Yakumo/Psychic Detective Yakumo? From what I've read it seems good. Any thoughts?

Gosh, wow, your blasé attitude toward death and gore really evokes awe, fear, and respect. Your lack of aversion to these themes makes you so unique and interesting and just plain better than anyone else I know. Do you want to come sit with me and the other cool kids? You can explain to us how Linkin Park and death metal albums are actually the most substantive forms of music, and how your fixation on Nevada-chan actually doesn't make you the sniveling, small-minded little cunt with a persecution complex any well-adjusted person might reasonably assume.
