best year in movies?

1998, maybe? The Big Lebowski, Saving Private Ryan and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas would all make my '90s top-ten list. Rounders, Shakespeare in Love, and The Thin Red Line would get mentions.
2001? Moulin Rouge and Donnie Darko right off the bat, Memento, The Fellowship of the Ring, Black Hawk Down, a Harry Potter movie that actually tried to be attractive to audiences, The Man Who Wasn't There, etc.

1994: Three Colours: Red, Hoop Dreams, Speed, The Last Seduction, Ed Wood, Pulp Fiction, Crumb
1984: Once Upon a Time in America, This is Spinal Tap, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Purple Rain, Amadeus, Blood Simple, The Terminator, Dune
1980: The Empire Strikes Back, The Shining, The Blues Brothers, Airplane!, The Elephant Man, Raging Bull

Limited myself to ten years (probably skewed towards more recent years due to availability/viewing habits):
1947: Out of the Past, Black Narcissus, Brighton Rock
1949: The Third Man, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Late Spring
1957: Sweet Smell of Success, Paths of Glory, The Seventh Seal
1962: Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Manchurian Candidate, La Jetee, To Kill a Mockingbird
1982: Blade Runner, Fanny and Alexander, E.T., Tootsie, Diner
1994: Hoop Dreams, Chungking Express, The Hudsucker Proxy
1995: Before Sunrise, Toy Story, Rob Roy
2000: In the Mood for Love, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Memento
2001: Waking Life, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring, Spirited Away, Donnie Darko, Monsters Inc. (still need to rewatch Mulholland Drive, but it probably has a space here reserved for it for when I do)
2005: The New World, Pride & Prejudice, Hidden, Serenity, Good Night, and Good Luck
Of these, 1982 and 2001 probably take the cake (also, boo flag for omitting to mention the best two movies of 2001, which I've helpfully put right at the front of my entry for that year). Shout out to 1949 for producing two of the absolute best British movies ever made, too.

Really? But it's Spielberg's best film! Honestly, I'd struggle to think of a better film examining the nature of 'humanity' and what makes us 'human'.

AI: Artifical Intelligence was sweet.
The correct answer was 1994. 1994 marks the crossroads where Hollywood finally saw the viability of the indie picture (Pulp Fiction), it had the excellent Hoop Dreams, it had the fondly remembered Lion King, the action movies were still running the sweet 80s vibe vis a vis True Lies, Speed, and it had Jim Carrey's best year in Dumb and Dumber and The Mask. Finally, Forest Gump, which I think everyone remembers as sort of overrated but it is in fact excellent.
Couple all of that with Shawshank, which I didn't like but what the fuck do I know, and we are in business.

Great movie, but bad in terms of Hollywood. Those Pulp Fiction knockoffs sort of kill the indie movement for me (sure, you've got Out of Sight, but that doesn't make up nearly enough for Boondock Saints and Doom Generation)
