I would have thought that if a format is valid for attachment in a post, then it would be valid for attachment in PM, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Specifically, I would like to know what formats are valid for attaching pictures in PMs.

Images are now allowed as attachments in private messages. Give it another try.
