Pretty sure I pasted this in IRC.

Michael Jackson was a tragically sad individual.

Say what you want, the man was severely abused as a child, and went on to retreat completely into his fantasy world, where he’d never have to grow up or face what happened to him. His wealth allowed him to surround himself with yes-people who never questioned him, and never encouraged him to seek help. He alienated the people who truly cared about him, because they reminded him of his hurtful, negative past.

The real tragedy came when he went on to perpetuate the cycle of abuse with other children, whom he did truly, truly love … but not in an age-appropriate manner. On another site I saw someone mention that he really saw himself as a child, which is quite true. MJ wanted so desperately to be a child again, that he fell in love with everything about young children.

I’m not defending pedophilia, I find what he did to be wrong and not at all appropriate … but the only thing I can find myself feeling about his whole situation is sadness.

He was an extraordinarily talented individual, and it’s sad that all of the allegations and atrocities that came out of the 90’s will eclipse all of that. He gave us some industry-changing music, some of the best pop-music of all time.

This whole situation is just really, really awful.

“A willow deeply scarred, / Somebody’s broken heart, / And a washed-out dream. / They follow the pattern of / The wind, you see, / Cause they’ve got no place / To be / That’s why I’m starting with me …”
– “Man In The Mirror”

Sprinkle everything in his life with a touch - just a touch - of eccentricity, and Michael Jackson makes sense. It's a sad series of events that led him to where he was. The way his father treated him as a child resulted in him becoming, for one, completely disturbed in general, but more specifically, made him very aware of his appearance - particularly his nose. His father calling him "fatnose" (or, uh, something to that effect) no doubt made a contribution in no small part towards his decision to have multiple rhinoplasties. Vitiligo didn't help him any either.

The way his father treated him probably resulted in his bizarre connection to children - he saw his adult years as (maybe subconsciously, considering he never explicitly says this) his chance to do what other kids do, to play with the best friend down the road. His shot at a real childhood. Society, though, couldn't accept the relationship he had with children - for good reason, and it would probably be wrong for them to accept it - but, assuming he didn't cross that line, it... makes sense.

But the tragic full-circle to it all is that the way his father treated him probably resulted in the personality that made him a superstar. He was turned into that incredible performer, but at the cost of that eccentric lifestyle. Sad story. :(

Seems a shade late for that.
Oh come on. "The King is dead, long live the King"?
That quote means "Long live (the new) King". When one King dies, you get a new one. Etc. etc.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but MJ wasn't found guilty of any of the charges against him. So if such a high profile case like that didn't find him guilty, then what grounds can you base that allegation on?
To reiterate though, totally in agreement with you over eveything else.

In regards to all the other bands mentioned here though, yes, they have all influenced music to some extent, and yes, some of them are over-rated. But you just can't deny the impact he caused in his musical career.

List made off the top of my head, so missing quite a few people.

Ralph Vaughan Williams
George Gershwin
Leonard Bernstein
Duke Ellington
Glenn Miller
Miles Davis
Chuck Berry
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
John Williams
Elvis Presley
Jimi Hendrix
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Who
Simon and Garfunkel
David Bowie
Queen
Bob Marley
Michael Jackson
The Police
The Pet Shop Boys
Blur/Oasis

I can't seem to think of any really influential artists from the last 10 years...
This should be a new topic.

The Pet Shop Boys?

That doesn't even sound like Duran Duran/Journey/Madonna.
