Ghoulash - what?
Inspired, yes, Slovenia vs. Algeria was probably the worst match so far. Serbia vs. Ghana wasn't too exciting either, but the second half was good. Anyway, today we have:
Netherlands vs. Denmark
Japan vs. Cameroon
Italy vs. Paraguay
Looking forward to the first match!

I expect Netherlands, Japan and Italy to win today.
( Although I am hoping that Italy doesn't win )

I am still finding it difficult to get my head around the fact that Switzerland actually beat Spain.
Also the first round of group matches ended with no player scoring twice :O

I think the swizz had like 4 shots on goal the entire game. Spain had 20+. Sometimes you're just unlucky.SlappyMcGee wrote:mohamedraif wrote:I am still finding it difficult to get my head around the fact that Switzerland actually beat Spain.

Uruguay scored three goals against South Africa. After the second goal the buzzing decreased dramatically in the stadium.Inspired wrote: A pretty low-key first round I say.

The Xavi shot off the top post was soul crushing. And Torres might have had one if he was at his best.rocket_thumped wrote:I think the swizz had like 4 shots on goal the entire game. Spain had 20+. DemonzLunchBreak wrote:Okay, I mean, the Swiss goal was ugly, and I had the game going 2-0 Spain in my bracket-ish thing, but honestly more is expected from this Spanish team. With the group of players they have, they need to beat mediocre teams like Switzerland. They had 28 "shots" in the game (according to some quick googling), but only six of those were on goal. That means their shooting was godawful, not that they were getting unlucky. Honduras and Chile aren't pushovers, but Spain still has a pretty good shot at advancing, if they can pull their heads out of their asses.
Iniesta played terrible and Villa got frustrated early. One of them should have been out by the half. The Swiss goalie looked great in the first half but he didn't even have to in the second.

One round does not a World Cup make, they'll have to redeem themselves this time around. I don't think Argentina played too great against Nigeria either, but today's match was (apparently) a great performance.
Also, Greece - Nigeria ended up being a surprisingly good one.

France were dreadful and fully deserve not to qualify. Mexico took the initiative, so credit for them.
I thought all the games today were good; in fact, despite a slow start I think this tournament is beginning to pick up.
Number of goals scored in first round of group stage games (16 games): 25
Number of goals scored in second round of group stage games so far (4 games): 13
PS: If you get on irc while watching the games live you might want to get into #worldcup at some stage where we've been having a "calling" competition.

Case in point: Germany (horrendous refereeing aside).Spawn of Yanni wrote:One round does not a World Cup make,

The reffing in a lot of the games has been particularly bad.

I feel a little ashamed to be English right now. Anyone got a country I can move into?

Temporary hiatus for learning and shit.

Only two positive aspects of that game:
1) Clean sheet
2) erm, there wasn't another one actually
England were absolutely dismal, and they'll need a huge turn-around to make it through now.
