Bulk vs Fine

I went to the store, and wanted to buy some milk. There was a 2 litre bottle for £1.99, and there were some 500 ml bottles for 49p each. Which should I get? A large bottle or four smaller ones?

Disclaimer: This is completely hypothetical, so the price of milk compared to reality is irrelevant here.

I'd say the 500ml bottles, as it's cheaper. The problem is, you're in theory doing more damage to the environment, as it requires more packaging, and therefore has to be processed more.

The two litre bottle would be easier to carry and more efficient (?). Unless you really want to damage the environment with the extra packaging to save three pence.

The large bottle. Why would you bother just to save thruppence? Besides, you probably burn an extra three pennies' worth of energy hauling the four half-litre bottles, because the packaging weighs more and they're harder to carry.

We're going to need someone to do tables up for how much energy is worth in the British Milk Market. Only then will we be able to make a decision. What further complicates it is the intricate social relationships between the milk.

See, Milk Bottle A won't travel with B because of certain stigmas. But C can't travel with D or B, and B must be refridgerated at all times.

I'd absolutely take the 2 liter bottles. The extra bottles to handle and the environmental cost isn't worth US$0.04 or whatever that comes out to in real money.

I'd totally go for the 2L bottle.
Although this conversation is totally irrelevant because the currency is not in USD.

This is a hypothetical situation, so do feel free to convert to your local currency.

You could also factor in storage- if your fridge is sorta full, then maybe its easier to jam in 4 small bottles than one large bottle.

Plus, not sure how your currency works, but wouldn't they all be rounded up anyway, so it equates to the same price?

Oh, and using beer in pastry is cool too :/

Then again, pastry is for wussies too, under the same circumstance.

Dude. Dude, dude. Take a 2L bottle of Beer, and 4 .5L bottles of Milk, and...

Oh, man...
I think... I think we've just come up with something big, here.

I agree! What is it? A pitcher with a lid?

A more practical reason for getting the smaller bottles would be the fact that they are most likely fresher. You only have 500 ml open at a time and open a fresh, sealed one when you want more rather than having to open the 2 liter bottle and keep it open during the entire duration of its consumption.

The smaller it is, the easier it is to pour, but it is harder to transport four than one. That said, 1 L cartons are where it's at. None of this bottle nonsense.

You know, you should get /bags/ of milk like my relatives do in Canada.

Actually, buying bags of milk powder would be much more efficient. The amount of milk powder you'd use to make two litres of milk would weigh substantially less than the bottles. :D

Factor this in: As you leave the store, many people (including the check-out person) will look at you and say, "What kind of idiot buys four bottles of milk?"

Then they will stone you.

PS Agree somewhat with Slaps; the milk's opinion matters too.
