I got a really annoying mozzie bite, and it reminded me of how i was taught to sooth the itchiness.

basically. you get something hard and thing like your fingernail (mine are bitten to a stump :/)

and you press really hard in the centre of the lump.

just posting this because i'd hate mozzie bites even more if i hadn't been taught this when i was 11.

Prevention's always better than cure - why don't you just get a misquito net? If ever I get bitten, it's usually while I'm sleeping.

Eucalyptus oil is excellent for treatment of mosquito bites.

never tried it (@ george)

and i hate though net things. heh.

but another thing that came to mind is stingoes, which is a product supposed to get rid of stinging things, including mozzie bites (says on the tube). For i used to use it but it does not work at all. The stuff itself is so itchy, and then once that wears off, you're back to the same annoying mozzie bite.

My old house backed onto a river that was pretty much mosquito central. :/
Strangely, about half of my family were eaten alive, the other half weren't bitten once.

Any advice for the cowardly mosquitoes that come in the night? :(

I've heard the best way to sooth the itchiness is to draw a map of the underworld over the area of your skin containing the itchiness, and then seeing where, specifically, it itches. Then you may want to cast some animal bones, maybe even pull the entrails out of a goat (a good strong one, not a runt), and then watch where the birds fly.
After that, go ahead and soothe it with some aloe or something. I dunno, I'm not a doctor.

I like how I was able to tell that you were an Aussie (without looking at your nationality marker) just from the way you talk about mosquito bites. It means I learned something from my trip there.

Anyhow, usually the best thing to do is leave the bite alone. Scratching can make it worse (it can start bleeding and such).

If you just don't itch it, the itch will go away. Also, the underworld map technique works, I tried it.

For some reason, I only get mozzie bites in groups.

mmm. i can't leave them alone, they drive me crazy.

and last night i got a freaking annoying one, one on my elbow.. so i can't use that press in the middle thing because it just hurts and makes it itch more when it's on bony, hard areas.

i looked for some eucalyptus oil, but it seems we don't have any, so i tried olive oil (haha). It actually has soothed it a bit so that's good.

hmph, as much as i get eaten up by those blasted things, i really dont ever get any kind of irritation, just them flying around me all the time... Very annoying indeed ... All Hail the Anti Mosquito Ray (still in production) crap... But yeah around here (the literal middle of nowhere/woods) the are absolutely horrible. We have a fogger but thats only temp.

Living in a rural area and frequently being out in the country (my family farms), I have just gotten used to mosquito/chigger bites, at this point I can just ignore them entirely

I get bitten frequently, but they are only a minor nuisance. I don't ever get real itchy when I get bitten. Only when I get ant bites does it actually itch badly.

Offense is almost always the best defense against bites. Instead of getting used to the bites like I am, a few people like me think that we should eliminate the problem immediately. In this case, it means tracking down the pool of water with eggs in it, chucking a large cube of potassium into it, and pouring a bucket of DEET into whatever is left of the water. Works every time, also guaranteed to break the ice at winter parties.

Well fotf's method, the fingernails, actually gives temporary relief, as well as make the itch last longer overall. I don't know about you, but that's how it is for me.
I usually try my best to ignore them, even when it drives me crazy, I just grind my teeth and think of something else. It's hard, trust me, especially since mosquitoes absolutely love me and my skin. My parents are nearly never bitten, and I'm always the one with the most bites anywhere. But I deal with it, put on some cream which I don't even know the name of, I jsut know my parents got it at some asian herb place, and it works.

You know it sucks more than anything to get bitten right on your knuckle, or any joint for that matter, cause the slightest movement just causes a feeling easily described as the worst of the worst when it comes to mosquito bites. Ack!

Or you could, you know, spray Benadryl on it, which actually makes it go away.
Also, to prevent mosquito bites, you might want to use insect repellent of some sort, be it citronella or DEET.

I usually rub the mosquito bite softly with my hand and it stops itching.

I have this stuff called After-Bite that you can apply to a bite quickly after it occurs and it stops it from itching. I think it's mostly Ammonia. I'd assume it's available in the rest of the world.
