I hear no consistency in how the year 2010 is to be said. Everyone seems to have their own way of saying it. This is to find out how you think we are to say 2010.

Most people now say "two thousand and nine" so do you keep with the current tradition of the long "two thousand and ten" ? The trouble here is in the future, will you be saying "two thousand and twenty three" which is unnecessarily long to say.

Or go to the much shorter "twenty ten". This would be a change from what we say currently. Since "Twenty nine" just doesn't work too well, consequently this method isn't very prevalent. But does it make more sense?

Or do you have another way of saying 2010?

Either way, i feel it would be useful to get other people's take on this.

If we're following the traditional naming patterns I'm pretty sure it's the Year of the Reticulated Tria- oh, wait, that's not what you meant.

Two thousand and ten. Twenty ten is the next most acceptable, due to following the convention used in the latter parts of last century, and its greater brevity. Also, twenty oh ten? Seriously? That would be 20010. Come back in 18 thousand years.

I've consistently heard the London Olympics being referred to as twenty-twelve. So perhaps we will say twenty-ten.

Hey, i though it was stupid too, but I heard (a confused) someone say it so I thought I'd better include it.

I think i'm going to say twenty ten. It will be scary and different :/

Back to what it was, Twenty Ten. It was Nineteen Ninety Nine. So go back to normal.

You could refer to 1999 as '99 though, but using '10 for 2010 just sounds dumb. I usually say Twenty Ten as well.

Twenty Ten or Two Thousand and Ten, pretty interchangeably. I voted for the former.

I wasn't aware we had "naming conventions" for years which could be broken.

I've only heard twenty ten.

I always figured I'd be going two thousand ten, but maybe we're going twenty. Everyone does use "twenty" when talking about upcoming sports events and such, and I guess it is the parallel to "nineteen-ninety". Didn't really think about that.

To be clear, that'd probably be better used for 2012.

I've thought of a few conventions I'd expect to see, myself:

"Two thousand (and) ten" is ultimately correct. It's quite likely the least convenient to say, but it's a definite fallback in case everything else sounds stupid.

"Twenty ten" rolls off the tongue easily, but you immediately head into problems when you hit "twenty eleven," which sounds just plain stupid. "Twenty twelve" sounds alright, but "twenty thirteen" is as stupid as "twenty eleven." Maybe by 2014, 2015, etc., we'll get used to how it sounds, but I can't see this convention being used beyond 2012 until the jump to 2020.

"Oh-ten" is somewhat tragic, but I've already heard it said. People are just so used to having more content in their years than "ten," "eleven," etc., without having to say the full year, and that's where this little mutant comes in. I think it's stupid, but some people might continue saying it.

"Ten." We stick with our assumption that the people we're speaking to are aware of what century it is. Since we still ostensibly have people who were alive in the first decade of the 20th century, they can give the fully qualified "nineteen ten." It sounds a little funny to just say "ten" or "eleven," but that's the convention I think can easily become the norm in the 2020's or 2030's.
I think this is the one I'm going to start saying.


What I'm also interested in, though, is how history books will refer to this time. "The 1900's," "the 60's," etc., roll right off the tongue, but what about "the two thousands?" "The twenty tens?"

Two Thousand and Ten, or Twenty Ten. Similar to how the news is always going on about 'Twenty Twelve.'

I have heard it called the 2000's called the 'Naughties' which is again technically correct, but sounds so bad and hopefully it'll never catch.
I suppose 'the twenty tens' may work, since its in the same format as 'the nineteen eighties'

Twenty oh ten makes no sense because it puts another 0 between 20 and 10
i.e. 20010="twenty oh 10

Twenty ten. From next year onwards this century is all twenties. I'm excited.
