As
boundlessdreamz put it:
This is incredible. This is the first time, I have seen a LARGE company
* Putting its users above profits
* Stand up to Chinese Government.
Since accounts of human rights activists were targeted, this operation was clearly done at the behest of Chinese Government. I'm disgusted by the levels to which the Chinese Government can stoop.
It is time the world stands up to China. If a corporation, whose main aim is to generate profits can eschew it and take a moral high ground why can't the government do it? Are the cheap goods from china so necessary that it is not worth antagonizing China ?
EDIT: Additional details from Enterprise blog post

It was an attack on the technology infrastructure of major corporations in sectors as diverse as finance, technology, media, and chemical
This is clearly an act of espionage by the Chinese Government. The bigger questions is whether these are the only companies targeted or the only ones discovered. This is not the first time, the chinese have tried something like this.

The researchers said hackers were apparently able to take control of computers belonging to several foreign ministries and embassies across the world using malicious software

Interesting. I didn't even realise Search Engines were available in China - must be a bugger to moderate.

This seems truly amazing, although I'm a little skeptical about companies putting users above profits.

They actually fulfill their motto. It's hard to believe that Google's going to take over the world when they do stuff like this.

Well, I don't know about these other dickbags, but let me say this:
I, for one, welcome our new chinese overlords. I'd like to
remind them that as a trusted forum personality, I can be helpful
in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar
caves.

Yeah, Google's motto is pretty stupid, especially when you look the subject from a Chinese Google customer's mind eye. I can't make of a meaning why Google is so confident about their motto, it seems so... unreasonable.

I'm looking forward to the Chinese government replacing "my little brother logged into my account" as the main reason for causing trouble on the forums.

Uh. Dude. Their motto is
Don't be evil. Were you even aware of that?

^Yeah... his post makes no sense.
In your face to those who think Google is out primarily for world domination, I'm not saying I agree with every rule they have, but in general they're a good company.

The chinese government got what they deserved. I don't understand why they're so caught up in moderation anyway. Sure, some bad stuff has happened, but hasnt it everywhere? They need to grow up.

Oh, I'm sorry. I was looking the subject from a completely different perspective.

Pretty great that Google didn't just totally give up when the Chinese government started getting annoyed. Glad they're standing by what they're doing.

I've been reading this thread for a while but I just re-read the title and got an amusing mental image.
