Do you sleepwalk?

I had an interesting discussion with my friends in college today about sleepwalking, and our various experiences with it. And I think it's fascinating how it can be a totally different experience for different people.

I for instance, have only sleepwalked once, as far as I know. I was sleeping in the same room as my brother at this point, when I was about eight. I apparantly got out of bed, walked over to the corner of the bedroom, and promply pulled my pants down to pee in the corner. Fortunately my brother was awake and stopped me in time - I didn't know anything about it until the following morning when he told me. And i know he wasn't making it up because, to be frank, he isn't that imaginative.

My friend called Steven at college however, appantly sleepwalks on a small scale pretty regularly. Small scale meaning he sits up in bed, and does something wierd. The example he gave me was that he took a picture off the wall by his bed, and placed it on the floor for no reason, before going back to sleep. Apparantly he is fully aware that he is sleepwalking when he does it, but can't stop himself.

What about you? Do you sleepwalk? Or maybe some other type of strange sleep... thing?

Discuss.

The only times I've ever sleepwalked were one night after the other, and both times I did the same thing. I got out of bed, ripped the blankets off, and left them in a pile. I remember doing it, but wasn't in control of what I was doing at the time. Hasn't happened since. If I recall correctly, it was right around the time when college admissions decisions were coming back, so I was probably more than a bit stressed out.

I only remember doing it once, I've been a really deep sleeper ever since. Essentially I got out of bed, walked a little distance and trod on some toys on the floor (I was probably about 6). They were those Micro Machines (Small cars, literally really small, google it). It was painful.

Well I suppose they stopped me walking into the wall.

I don't feel like he put enough effort into it, really.

I haven't ever sleepwalked, to my knowledge. I roll around in bed a lot instead, and I used to suffocate myself with blankets. I have several childhood memories of nice dreams being interrupted when I woke up due to lack of airflow.

I have never sleepwalked, however I've been told that I laugh in my sleep on a regular basis. Not sure why.

When I was about 11/12-ish I woke up and ran downstairs and ran in circles in the kitchen breathing heavily, I have done this on about 4 occasions but not recently. I had no idea i was doing it until my mom told me. I'm surprised I didn't run into anything.

Only when I'm roused a few hours into sleep after being deprived of it for a while. I usually do what I would have done if I were conscious anyway. I've lost track of the number of times I've woken up in the shower (although sometimes in my boxers).

When I was about 11-12 I used to sleepwalk out of my room and claw at the door of my parents' bedroom; I think it's because I'd just started at secondary school, and was a little nervous.

My german teacher last year told me that when he was on a school trip to Prague as a boy, a friend of his had sleepwalked out of a fourth storey window. He survived (somehow).

I figured that my brother sleep-walks recently, I woke up at the middle of the nigth to get some water to drink, I saw him at the kitchen, standing next to chair, mumbling some stuff.

It creeped me out, however. When I told about it to him, he just laughed and said nothing except regretting the fact that he is sleep-walking.

Fuck, Suki, that's actually kind of dangerous.

Er... what? No more dangerous than doing a day-to-day while tired, is it?

My immediate thought if I woke up in the shower would be, "Thank God I haven't drowned yet."

I used to sleep walk occationally when I was a child. I'd always walk up to my parents room; often because of a nightmare. The next morning, I never remembered either the nightmare or walking up the stairs to their room.

I read a story of a guy who apparently got up at 3 in the morning, stark naked, and went to mow the lawn. Even once the lawn mower was going, he still didn't wake up. When his wife told him about it the next day, he didn't believe her until she told him to look at the soles of his feet, which were covered in dirt.

You realize how hard it would be to drown in a shower, right?

Eh? Slip, fall down, hit your head, boom. There's usually a little standing water in my shower.

Your nose would tip your face to the side a little though. Enough anyways. You could potentially inhale a little water and choke on it - but that would probably wake you up.

How much would it such to die when you're sleepwalking? That would be totally unfair.

A friend of my brother's nearly did, choking on a sandwich he constructed and attempted to eat while sleepwalking. Luckily, it just makes a good story now.

That wouldn't be as bad as dying when fully aware of your surroundings, would it?
