Real Life Hobbies?

I debated whether or not to put this in the "Community Projects" forums and ended up posting here instead. If a global/admin feels this is the wrong place, feel free to move it where you think it belongs.

After a few weeks into summer, I've become pretty bored. Like, immensely bored. I'm looking for real life hobbies to do (ie. model rockets, etc.). I considered picking up a programming language or something on the computer but the whole goal of this is to be doing something without my face glued to a screen. I like building things (legos are a huge example here), so hobbies like catching butterflies or something aren't desired. I'm wanting to major in Mechanical Engineering / Energy Efficiency when I go to college so anything mechanical-y would be awesome.

Do any of you enjoy any hobbies that are similar to what I'm looking for (or any at all for that matter)?

Great idea. It's so much fun, you can make the coolest things. Maybe try building a computer or going swimming. Paint if you want to learn how to do it well

Legos.

Edit: Oh, didn't see you already mentioned them. I definitely recommend them, though; I was just browsing the Lego Store for old times' sake the other day, and some of the new stuff looks pretty sweet.

Get a group of friends together and do some rocketry. It's well worth it.

Get your exercise on. It makes you feel great and it has sweet long-term results.

How about chess?

Haha, the juxtaposition of the posts. Good stuff.

Yeah, chess is fun. Also, welding is fun. I've soldered things before, and man oh man is that fun stuff. Slaps' idea is a good one, too. I should definitely start doing that. ;;

Just art in general is a good thing to have as a hobby. Drawing, painting, photography, some other types of things. Do you play any instruments? Those are always good skills to have as well. And if you like doing things with your hands, learn to sew. Trust me, it's useful as fuck.

All of these things are very fun. I just welded a working radio and I felt really good about myself.
Excercise is always a plus; specifically, I suggest biking because it doubles as handy transportation and is fun.
Rocketry is better in a group.
Chess is cool, but card games are easier to pick up and put down. Gin, spades, bridge, etc.
And most of all, read! Especially if you're going into your SAT year (I think you are, maybe), because it totally helps.

What is the fucking difference about playing Chess and being in front of the computer all day?

I recommend music, exercise and parties.

By your logic, how is music any different from chess?

Also, parties can't really be called a hobby. Maybe clubbing. Maybe. If we're being pretty damn loose with the definition.

And exercise has already been mentioned.

This was a pretty bad post, Donfuy. I'm not angry, though. Just... disappointed.

By music I meant not only listening to music, but actually playing it.
And what, I'm just emphasizing that exercise is an excellent hobby!
You're probably right about the parties :3

Play sports with like three other people. Backyard soccer. Basketball. Baseball, whatever. Some of the best times I've had were four-person games like that.

If you have enough people, soccer and European handball is awesome.

Ordered.

To the rest: I'm already doing fitness related things. I'm looking to build stuff, take things apart, etc. Preferably not kits that tell you exactly how to do it. Leave some room for creativity, but not as open as something like painting (I want to be an engineer when I grow up, so anything towards that direction).

Edit: I'm going to learn how to make solar panels!

Cycling is what I do. Gets you nice and healthy and some pretty nice country-side to see around here.

Does this count?

More seriously, build a model plane :D (I'm mostly done with this... going on 2 years, I haven't worked on it much for about 16 months :/ )

Sometimes the scale models of houses, planes, cars, are fun to do, definitely time consuming.
there are kits out that you can make and paint your own model t or build an old antebellum house out of balsam wood and other things. alot of times they tell you that you can paint them and assemble etc.
or you could do something with chemistry, sometimes theres kits out that you can make your own goo or something, I dont know if your in to that kind of stuff, but sometimes making things like a rubber ball or flubber, who knows you might discover a new concoction to remove scum from the earth.

Playing chess over the board has its own subtle psychological strategies that aren't present in online chess. If I'm allowed to I always play chess standing up. Somehow... most weaker players find this REALLY disturbing and it messes with their minds. No idea how this happens, but it just does. And about half the stronger chess players that I know of have their own repertoire of annoying songs that they repeatedly sing in front of their opponents whenever they play. It should work if you do it well enough.
