I assume he's a little shaken up, but I think he'll be alright.

Aw man, I'm feeling the love.
Yes, I am fine. My house has survived extremely well. The only damage sustained here was from falling objects, so we have a chip out of the wall and another out of the floor.
It was a pretty rude awakening, at 4:35am, though it seems I may have slept through a bit of the quake.
There was a smaller 5.something quake about 20 seconds before the main 7.1. When I woke up, my family were already out of bed and in the hallway, presumably from the pre-shock.
Some of our friends at this point reported seeing a great flash in the sky, which was at the main substation for the South Island. Later, my brother theorised that a transformer may have toppled over.
After it stopped, I just wanted to get downstairs and out of the house. So I was scrambling around on the floor, panicking until I found my torch. With it, I helped my dad find his keys and get into his truck where he had more powerful torches for his job.
It took a bit for my legs to stop shaking, and to calm down. The aftershocks are getting weaker, but I have had no fear of them because they will always be smaller than the main event.
We were some of the lucky ones. We never lost our water, and the power came back on at about midday.
Many streets around the suburb are cracked. Others have little silt volcanoes (google sand boils) sprouting up. Some streets are hit bad, with the road risen up from the liquefaction, others have been flooded by silt.
On the other side of town, the water mains and sewers have cracked and broken, and there is widespread flooding as a consequence.
So, not an entirely pretty sight, but most of the town is holding up fine. But there is still a lot of damage to be fixed up.
My mum's work for example has rows and rows of 15 metre high racking, full of cartons, that have just toppled.
so yeah.
thanks guys <3

What did one techtonic plate say to the other after an earthquake?
Not my fault.
Not my fault.

Tycho: "I don't know why people ever, ever try to stop nerds from doing things. It's really the most incredible waste of time."
Adam Savage: "I reject your reality and substitute my own!"
