I see people overusing this one more and more these days. Everything is basically this or basically that. It's weird how even on the Internet, people put nonsense adverbs all over their sentences. "basically" is particularly insidious, because it's a four-letter piece of shit.

I'm guilty of it myself, though I've avoided it here.

"just" is another one.

Yanni's use of the word "literally", when not intentional, bothers me more than these interjections. They're the same as saying "um" or "uh" in that they just serve to give you a little time to think about what you're going to say next.

Basically, the word "basically" has 4 syllables compared to, basically, the word "like."

That's basically all I have to say, basically.

I see many more problems with "literally" than with "basically". If somebody has reduced their idea to it's most basic form (or at least a more simple form), "basically" is appropriate. "Literally", however, is very often used improperly (example, "The guy literally pissed himself laughing" when the man did not urinate).

To be honest, I'd rather people use words like "literally" and "basically" than fuck the basic rules of grammar up the ass.

Oh wow, that's so ironic. I was talking to a friend of mine, like, basically just the other day who literally said it with four syllables.

I get mildly annoyed by this after someone's used it more than once a paragraph, because at that point it becomes patronising. Because basically is the new like, I find myself getting mildly annoyed at people quite often.

Although I say it the same way as 'stro, could it be possible you're referring to people pronouncing it 'bay-sick-al-ee'? If so, those people are wrong.

I wouldn't call them wrong, just saying it differently. Potatoes potatoes, tomato tomato. Err, that doesn't really work in text, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Not directly on topic, but I love/hate when people use the word "literally" when they mean the exact opposite. It's hilarious.

Yeah, I hear a lot of things worryingly similar to "No, man, you're wrong. The sewerage and river in Shawshank's Redemption literally is his rebirth into a new life, metaphorically.
