In my mind, this is an old vs. new question. Technology versus artisanship. As such, I vote for electric.

Electric.

Everything is better with electricity.

There is no reason to play acoustic guitars. You are perpetuating a niche industry, people! Stop buying records, also.

You can make an electric guitar sound like an acoustic. But if you're poor acoustic is better, I think.

Odds are, though, that my first guitar is going to be an acoustic, since I highly doubt that my mom would be up for me buying an amp and dealing with the loudness I would surely play.

You can buy very small and cheap amps that have headphone outs on them.

That little number is loud enough to play with a drummer and is loaded with features that a budding young guitarist wants to fuck with. It is also often cheaper on the streets and bundled with a halfway decent guitar.

TBH, I love playing both. And you can now plug in an acoustic into an amp, thus it can be as loud as a standard electric (If you don't know how that works, look it up on google). But, nothing can compare with the sheer power of an electric guitar's distortion. I love turning that shit up and pissing off the people upstairs :P so much damn fun.

There are acoustics that have electric outs; however, it starts to get really expensive when you are talking about one that does both with a good degree of quality. Your option there is to get a semi-hollow electric guitar, and that's a good option.

I definitely go with electric. The possible range of sound is immense.

electrics can sound spectacular, but i'm almost always one for direct physical stuff over motors and power and whatever. I mean I like it. physically creating music, as a partnership with the instrument is very cool, the middleman of the amp makes it less so. Which is why I reckon probably an acoustic person over electric. as well as bike over motorbike and a few other things.

Having said this, visually electrics win just because some are too fucking gorgeous eg.

I also have this weird affection of natural sounds/visuals being digitally/electronically manipulated which I guess it what happens with and amp kind of. So I dunno. I reckon overall I have to go with acoustics because pretty much everyone has this feel about them which is fucking perfect, but then some electrics sound and/or look spectacular as well, plus other factors all of which makes the decision hard. But acoustics win in my current mindset anyway based on feel.

But shit that Goya Rangemaster that the Local Natives dude owns is incredible.
