I strongly dislike the new timer system. It puts a much heavier emphasis on first completion than excellence and precision. I also strongly dislike the last level on hard

I've only played the Hard column so far, but these levels are all pretty fantastic, and that's coming from someone who strongly dislikes most of the original metanet levels.

For anyone who cannot play with z as jump key, you can use this program http://www.randyrants.com/2006/07/sharpkeys_211.html to remap your keys in windows (it will remap them in whole system, not just n, so after playing you need to redo it to work properly). I guess it's a pretty good temporal workaround.

Congrats to everyone else who finished it, too hard when there are some levels filled with gold and then suddenly there is 5 levels in a row where there is no gold and then you start the sixth level and its very long and you have 12 seconds left....!
Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

This. I hated it.
The fact that you lose now by time instead of going through a long, tiring, phycological process and making yourself quit is a very bad decision. That is what N was based upon, IMO. The fact that you can continue, and continue, and continue as long as you mentally can before exploding was all the fun in the game.

If this is what the 2.0 is sticking with, I'm staying downgraded.

Jeez, calm down a bit, mate. The "Arcade" mode is just a new mode you'll be able to play, there will still be the classic format as far as I know; so just play that if you don't like it...

Yeah, this arcade mode thingy requires a completely different type of level anyway. (Imagine playing through, say, the 80's column in this mode. Suicide.) It's just an option.

And, honestly, continuing until you "mentally explode" just amounts to ragequitting. And I don't like that feeling. I prefer losing because I lost.

That tiring and precise process is definitely a valuable and essential quality of the game, but, uh, I'm not sure I would exactly call it "fun". It's one of the main reasons I don't play it these days. On the other hand, I'm loving this new challenge mode, which as ska points out won't replace the original style of gameplay.

It's not as if the game doesn't require skills and precision when played this way—if anything, it demands those qualities even more, as well as adding the element of consistency. It just challenges these skills in a different way which I find very refreshing.

I prefer losing because I lost as well, but N has gathered it's little fame by making players lose by ragequitting. I think if they change that, it'll still be good, but it won't be the original platformer that it used to be. Also, if this is just a secondary mode, and "normal" mode will still be available, then I say go ahead.

I like this idea for a Holiday Challenge but just that. It is an interesting take on column speedrunning which I would have sworn that M&R sneaked in to IRC oneday and biggie backed of this idea. If episode highscoring becomes this type of challenge it will be very interesting. The runs will be much sloppier than they are now because people wont be able to suicide and retry after messing up. I think this is ok so long as level highscoring remains the same. People need to be able to suicide and retry at infinitum. That is truly the essence of what this game is. The grueling mind game you have to endure to try so many times until you come out with a perfect run.

I would argue that this is considerably more valid for highscorers than people like me who mostly just map and can't even imagine competing against some of the runs up there.

But it's moot because M&R are smart enough to know that removing features/modes does not an update make.
