I want to know, because I used to use mIRC, but I'm thinking of changing.

irssi. It's wonderful. Even running in Cygwin it's light on memory use, and on unices it can't be beat. The only thing that could be improved is, as one website points out, "not depending on fucking glib".

In the end, that's really minor.

I use Xchat Aqua now, and it's great. I've used Chatzilla, Colloquy , and Mibbit as well. Mibbit is god-awful. Avoid it at all costs. Colloquy has flaws, but it's pretty and functional. It's basically well-built, but it has some irritating details. Chatzilla is good for a new-comer to IRC. There's nothing much wrong with, save for lack of features.

I find browser-based irc clients more convenient.

I use mIRC because I have used it for a long time. I know how it works exactly, and I like the scripts functionality that not all other clients support.

Mibbit. It keeps disconnecting me and it's very primitive. It fails.

Good point, but it's usually better to use a real programming language like Python or PHP to make an IRC bot (due to mIRC's lack of versatility, and the fact that you have to go extra lengths to have it run under its own nickname).

I said other, because I use Songbird to connect to IRC. But in reality, it's just a chatzilla plug-in. My bad.

I've always found XChat to be the most intuitive interface. It's highly configurable and supports many different types of script and plugins. I think the main reason I use it instead of mIRC is that I can minimize XChat to my system tray... also, it's prettier.

Isn't XChat un-free for Windows?

I'm thinkin' pickin' Pidgin. But I still haven't really thought about which one I'd use simply as a separate program. Perhaps I would if I had planned for IRCbots yea.
