Hey, gang.
The first round of Administrong is designed to weed out some of the competition as well as to show how well you can collaborate. Yeah, that's right. Being the best parts of a whole is the goal here, and without the social aspects usually associated with collabing. If you're wondering how this is revolutionary, it's not, yet. This is just a good way to get a feel for what kind of mappers you are , and whether you can create good gameplay instances that aren't dependant on grander concepts, like art.
You'll each be given one sixth of the standard empty map to fill. There are some logical rules here; don't put any ninjas and don't seal off any sides. You can have partial wall, so that if your roommate had another partial wall it would block it; don't worry about that stuff. But try to avoid sealing off a side of your portion. Try and make some sort of challenge specific to your sixth. Maybe a mine jumper, or maybe you have to avoid a chase drone hanging out there.
Now, to be perfectly precise. that means you get ten squares horizontally (left to right) if you are in a corner, and eleven if you are at the center spaces. The bottom goes to the halfway line including the middle square. That means that the bottom left corner will have ten squares horizontally and 12 vertically. The squares are shown using "L" in the neditor.
A graphic representation:
So, you'll each be making one of those sections. Get it? Good. Don't? Ask somebody.
Now, here's what's going to happen. The ten best of these 70 portions will get a free pass to the next round, their portion unused. (If there are any dropouts at this point, and no willing replacements, this section will suffer and few of you will get free passes.) You're done!
The ten worst will be put in the first unusual position of the competition. You'll be given a rather incomplete map, made up of five other parts and your own! It's your job to fix it. Make it a workable map. You have complete creative decision, and you need to prove to us that you can make a map from these parts.
Every section submitted will be graded, critiqued and returned to you. The criteria for the individual piece will be 15 points for creativity, 15 for playability, and ten for it's use in the map. That means that you might want to get on the wire to the guy using your map and pressure him, let him know what you were trying to do with your map section and make sure it is used properly.
The people making the maps will be graded with 15 points for creativity, 15 for playability, and ten for the edits they made. Were they necessary edits? Did you keep the idea of the individual part intact?
Here are your sections:
Your part is due in ONE WEEK! That's seven days! We'll give you a place to put these then, don't go PMing them, but feel free to submit to NUMA or post them here if you want.
As always, help is encouraged! Help the dudes around you, and you might just win a prize you weren't expecting.
ONE WEEK!
Love,

About the side-sealing, is this allowed?

This looks very nice!
I made a bottom right section as indicated that I should. I'll put it in a spoiler with a short text to follow it.
I surrounded it with "4s" tiles to indicate its bounds.

Diamondeye's Section (bottom right)
The idea about the uppermost cluster of gold in this section is that there could be a needed switch in there. The best way to approach this section would be from the top, since you need the switch next to the floorguard in order to exit the main part of the section.
The gauss is a threat mostly to you if you are "inside" (between the oneways and the lockeddoor), but can potentially range out of there. The lower clusters of gold are optional while the uppermost could be used to contain a switch of some sort.

Cool. I like this contest already.
So, are we supposed to make sure that nothing in our section can affect the gameplay in other sections? (i.e. If I use a chaser drone in my part should I take pains to make sure it won't move to another part of the map, thereby messing with the gameplay there?)

I think a fairly interesting workaround would be required for the mapper if a chaser were to run into other sections, so to be less annoying I'd just seal off the path it follows with % tiles.OneSevenNine wrote:Cool. I like this contest already.

Drones can go into other sections! Don't be silly. But you might be adding a headache to your lead mapper. :)

How do we know who is making our map with us? For example, are Tunco and rocket_thumped making the sections bordering mine?SouthyMcGee wrote:Every section submitted will be graded, critiqued and returned to you. You won't know until after you're done, and that's the trick to it.bufar wrote:How do we know who is making our map with us? Guys, several of you so far have included ninjas, though The Staff specifically mentioned not to. I dislike the no-ninja rule, because when you judges go to playtest the submissions, as I assume you will, ninja placement will be random, possibly lessening the gameplay effect.
As for my map, the gameplay is based around a ninja being placed four squares to the right of the corner, but it's been removed as per instructions.

My map is not designed to have a ninja anywhere in particular. It's just a fun gold-collecting corner. Enjoy.
P.S. I dislike the rules and idea of this first competition, simply because the only people who really get to collaborate are the bottom 10, if I understand correctly.
Also, my favorites so far are nevershine and onesevennine.
