There are times when you don't, like with yours, which is a photograph. Most signatures, though, will look a lot better with a border because without it, they don't have definite edges, which is off-putting.

Most of you probably noticed what Slick265 failed to do but you also failed to highlight upon it: his colour choice is shit.

Colour is often something that most beginners do not know how to use correctly. They are so caught up in the novelty of making an image that anything seems to look cool, even if it has bright, conflicting colours. I'm not sure if colour choice is something that can be taught more than something that has to be learned. A piece of advice though: Don't settle for the first colour you choose from the colour picker. Experiment with multiple colours and see what you like best. I often spend 30+ minutes getting the right colour for a single part of the signatures I make.

Brushes are great to start with as they teach you about placement and focal points and I would encourage you to experiment with them more. You can create some pretty awesome signatures with just a few brushes, some great placement and a simple colour scheme.

Also, if you want some great brushpacks, PM me and I'll send you a few. The All Time deviantArt list is pretty good though. Anything by Axeraider70 is acceptable.

If you use anime screenshots, all the colors you need are already there. ;)

Southpaw hit it head-on about the colors. I think you have a set focus in each of your sigs, but it's the blending of the foreground and background which is lacking - depth, in other words.

If you have Photoshop, I did make a couple of tutorials (here and here) a while back, though I really should make some more.
Slick265 wrote:I notice i posted alot, so i'll hold off for a while.
I do not agree with this - get your image topic in the images section. Continual update each post with new sigs so we can keep up with your progress (though, limit double posting, just update your last one). But an important thing to remember is to not spend <5 minutes on a sig and rush it through. It's better to have one awesome sig in 15 minutes than three mediocre ones in that same interval.

But I'm glad to see people still using effects, not just stocks. Looking for to your progress here.

I often spend about an hour on a single signature anymore adjusting everything I can think of.

It's also a rule of thumb to have a somewhat established sense of design and aesthetic / a general knowledge of art before you start making images.

Does it really matter if people want to rate the signature above them?

3/5 to the signature below me.
