I always play with items on, I do however turn smashballs off if cheap final smash moves will come into play. I like yoshi's smash, lucaroi's very good if you use it right. I just sneak under and then hit B. I fy staight up and own every one, not giving them any time to escape aura storm! Pikachu's is good, but I'm not good enough to use it. Sonic's, however, is very cheap in that it can go anywhere and requires no skill to dodge. Kirby's is just pimp, no other way to put that, and ganon's goes super fast, very hard to dodge in time, unless totally out of y-axis area.

I usually keep items on, exept for if I get annoyed by them. Once me and my friend had 1 life and I was killed by a Bomb-Omb. Also, my brothers will always keep hitting me with the fan over and over until I get to about 125%, then they kill me.

The characters I usually pick are Snake, Ike, and Captain Falcon. The only person that I think sucks is Olimar. His attacks never work with me.

Smash balls aren't cheap depending on who uses it. Kirby, Ice Climbers, and Olimar all have cheap Final Smashes. Marth's is also an automatic kill. Other people have really bad Final Smashes though, like King Dedede and Donkey Kong.

Almost everyone in the game has some particular thing that is bad about them. Either they have a bad recovery (Ness, Lucas) A bad final smash ( Zero Suit Samus, King DeDeDe) or bad attacks (Olimar, Yoshi)

What? Olimar is one of the stronger characters, though a bit hard to use - you constantly have to pluck Pikmin, and the range/power of your attacks varies based on which type is next in line. And his recovery ranges from amazing to abysmal, of course, since it relies on 1. having a suitable ledge to grab and 2. having a decent number of Pikmin.

Also, Marth's final smash isn't that cheap, since it doesn't come out instantly, you actually have to line someone up, and it's unlikely to hit more than one person. Zelda/Sheik's is faster, much easier to hit multiple targets with, and almost always an instant kill anyway. Ganondorf's covers half the stage and is almost always an instant kill. Olimar's deals about 60% of impossible-to-avoid damage to everyone, and then explodes. Don't even get me started on Super Sonic.

Also, add Captain Falcon to the list of people with shonky final smashes. Even if you manage to hit someone, it doesn't KO half the time.

Kirby's final smas is not cheap, you can actually dodge it. I've sidestep right during the effect period and haven't gotten hit, even when in range.

You can avoid any Final Smash of you sidestep, dodge or airdodge at the right time. Also, there are other weird circumstances when Kirby's doesn't hit for some reason.

The only time I've actually dodged Kirby's Final Smash was using Zelda and transforming during the effect period. I read about that trick somewhere.

Olimar might be a good fighter, but he's an awful character. He's like a new-age Game & Watch--annoying and without a proper fanbase to warrant his inclusion.

playing this again with friends, i think it's genuinely awesome how many things happen in this game for no particular reason at all.

Me: jesus christ you just spiked me with luigi's taunt
Ziv: Yeah i pressed the wrong button while you were ledge hanging.
Me: WHAT A BADASS.

Ziv: i just killed myself with toon link's final smash. how is this possible.
Me: I have no idea.
Ziv: oh well.

Ziv: I BLEW UP FOR SOME REASON
Me: I DID TOO

this is how games should be. totally ridiculous and exponentially more fun the more friends you have playing.

That's true. So many games these days are so predictible, even when they try not to be.

I'd agree with that, although I think Game & Watch is better than the Ice Climbers. I think more people remember what a Game & Watch is than have played Ice Climber. Lucas is also a bit dubious, since he's both obscure and a clone. Couldn't we have Samurai Goroh or something instead?

I like Game & Watch, Olimar too (but I suppose I've a soft spot for their original titles). Ice Climbers and Lucas I can't stand, that kind of character design makes me feel a little nauseous. Like this advert I saw on a tube once: a rescue dog with a human arms and muscle structure telling me to insure my self or I might get hurt. Disturbing.

Ice Climbers are one (two?) of my favourite characters. And I loathe G&W, Olimar and Lucas/Ness with a passion.

Ice Climbers - More skill is needed in either protecting the blue one or making the pink one follow you.
Game and Watch - Horrible attacks
Olimar - Entirely based on the Pikmen and the order they are spawned in.
Ness/Lucas - Horrible recovery, not a wide enough attack scheme. "PK FIRE!" "PK THUNDER!" "PK FREEZE!"

Ice Climbers - Sure
Game and Watch - He has THE fastest, strongest smashes in the entire game and a great aerial game.
Olimar - Also amazing smashes and aerials. blue_tetris I'm a fan of Olimar and Pikmen. ;__;
Nees/Lucas - Ness has a okay recovery while Lucas (because of a neat glitch) is in the top 5 of best recoveries in the game. Even though everything is PK all of the moves do completely different things.

Then. Kirbys final smash is on of the worst because it has horrible knockback. You can live at 80%...
Ice Climbers in not very effective either because you can just stay in the air and not take damage. The only good thing about it is that they can move around while its happening.

Definately. Its amazing seeing a Groudon, Resetti, Ganondorf, a waddle doo, Dedede and a sandag all fly into one pot. Then somehow make spicy curry...

(NESS!,LUCAS!) BAD RECOVERY! i think otherwise

They have the best recovery by me, for a few reasons

*Once You Master it Its UNBEATABLE!
*If you use it and crash into someone you bring them along inflicting major damage
*i just sit there using PK thunder and steering into other people causing them MAJOR DAMAGE
*You can use it to float in mid air for small periode of time
*it OWNZ

Yeah, I cooked a torchic and made it into spicy curry, what of it?
Stuff with a point

Kirby's final smash is good because it can spawn items, and depokemon/detrophy the field.

The whole point is that you have to aim it, and if you miss, you'll die. Even if you master the recovery, you still probably will miss 25% of the time

I have mastered it. I get it 100% of the time. Isnt that what mastered means...? Anyway the only time I dont recovery with Lucas is when someone steals the ledge from me or the person is really good at hitting me out of my recovery.

When me and my friend do Lucas on Lucas battles I like to run of the edge and absorb his PK thunder before he can hit himself. xD

There's a competitive scene for brawl. You guys should give 1v1 no-items, selected stages a try - it's a lot more rewarding than wins coming from an imbalanced item or a ridiculously powerful stage hazard.

also, b_t should play pikmin - it's great fun.

...I'm guessing you're not into competitive gaming. Have you read Sirlin's "playing to win"?

We play with at least 20 stages, and the winners of tournaments, while admittedly dominated with metaknight, are at least 10 different regular characters.. and even Captain falcon wins sometimes.

Even in melee, 5 characters could regularly win and even a donkey kong won a big tournament some time ago -- and we play on quite a few stages

I think we're entitled to play the game how we want

Dude, i was joking. You are entitled to play the game how you want, and if you favor competitive style play, I have no problem with that. What i do have a problem with, is people who push this onto others, and decry people who don't play tournament style as scrubs or n00bs.

And no, i haven't read this 'playing to win' thing. But if you could link me, i'd be eager to.

sorry.. online it's difficult to notice sarcasm -- and there are quite a few people who really oppose competitive gaming

http://www.sirlin.net/ptw
a good read i think, even if you don't agree with the viewpoint.
