700 years is sarcasm, and aids/flu is a joke, i got that as a forward

jesus ppl are oviously getting tired of the media telling how this is going to destroy the world so ppl are ovioulsy going to make fun of it

u havent heard about it for the last week cuz media got tired of it and wanted more crap to tell about, its just like the iraq war, the media only posted things that were going wrong and u havent heard about that cuz things are actually going good there (thats why obama didnt live up to moving out the troops), i mean the ppl who died where in mexico cuz they dont have what we have

there was a kid at our school who had it, 3 days later he was back and fine

laugh for once in your life, it increases your life expectancy

See... democracy is cool and all in theory, but I just see examples every day of people who just shouldn't be allowed to make any decisions whatsoever based on their worldview. Giving anyone a soapbox is a terrible, terrible idea.

Democracy =/= populism. It doesn't give a soapbox to anyone. It gives a soapbox to a demographic, and that soapbox is only available long enough to say one thing really loudly.

The problem I mentioned is still plainly there. We elect representatives based on popular opinion, which by and large is decided by the "just sounds right" method. If I haven't mentioned this problem in another part of this forum yet: it seems to me that one can either go to school to be someone who makes important decisions and knows how to get those into motion, OR (and that's an exclusive or) one can go to school to become qualified to make those decisions in the first place. Politics is looking more and more to me like a huge frickin' circus, where experts in various fields of science, economics, and sociology are regularly ignored in favor of the opinion of the masses who voted the way they do based on their gut, and it's only incidental that part of the voting populace develops its opinions from the study of those issues. If enough people believe that abortion "just seems wrong," they're going to vote for the guy who opposes abortion "because it's wrong," and any actual study into the matter is largely irrelevant. And those representatives are the ones who write and approve our laws for a few years before the process repeats.
I don't doubt that there are people in power who are making informed decisions, but I don't think it's a significant number, or nearly as many as should.

Oh yes. Thats how our current mayor is some guy off TV who is in the habit of smiling a lot.

But about swine flu, "a Samoan woman who returned from Victoria over a week ago and unwittingly passed the flu on to her grandchildren who then spread it to school mates and other contacts.

As a result, 30 people in the Samoan community are now confirmed with the virus."
swine Flu is all in Australia at the moment. New Zealand only has about 100 cases only. All the negative publicity stopped travelers coming, helping to stop the spread.
I say blame the Aussies.

Yeah, man, I was walking around downtown and this guy comes up to me and is all like, "Hey bro, do you have a quarter for the bus?" and then he coughed on me and I asked him why he was sick and he said he had AIDS at which point I immediately covered my mouth so that I wouldn't contract it.

Coincidentally, I had sex the other night and contracted swine flu. FML.
That is THE funniest thing I've ever read. Oh, and @happy_taco, claiming something was a joke after everyones already bashed you for it doesnt make you sound any less stupid.

Some poor girl got swine flu in memphis, she was the only one, so the quarantined here. Because thats going to solve alot.

A girl at my old high school got swine flu, and it turns out if youre not an idiot and see the doctor its not much worse than the bad case of the flu.

I always thought the whole thing was blown way out of proportion by the media to be honest.

On a side note my dad went up to his old fraternity house at UT in Austin and he brought home a "Swine Flue--Quarantine Zone" sign with a pig and radioactive symbol on it. It's hilarious.
