No More Stories Are Told Today I'm Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories The World Is Grey I'm Tired Let's Wash Away and Frengers, both by Mew, finally appeared in my letterbox today. The new Muse album is also coming out in a few days (and leaking presently it would seem) but my expectations for that one are muted.

A math rock group from Chicago, I've been really digging these guys lately. They've released two EPs which I'll talk about down below. Huge post, I know, but I was really bored + I love this band.

Image

Trees, Swallows, Houses

The first track is really the dealbreaker. If you can't appreciate the song's intricate, over the top instrumentation and the (admittedly odd) vocal work, chances are you probably won't like the rest of the album. Give it a chance however, and you'll find that there is a lot to love here. One of my favorite things is that the bass is really given a prominent role in the music. The bass intro to "Stories About Ourselves" is a particular standout. Lyrically these guys are just as dense as they are musically. While certain themes can be found, and single lines plucked out and analyzed, the songs mainly seem to be very esoteric. They give you enough so that you can get a glimpse of where they're headed, but any concrete meanings quickly get buried in cryptic references and surreal imagery. Lyrically my favorite song would be "The Most Trustworthy Tin Cans", combining strung-together childhood memories and the hint of a friendship now over. While five of the seven tracks are fairly straightforward math rock songs, two of them are much different. "The Ongoing Horrible" and "The Sounds They Make" opt for more folk themed tunes. The songs are still pretty technical, they do some fancy magic with their acoustic guitars, but the effect is much more subtle. While these two tracks offer a break for the ears, they do seem a little incongruous with the rest of the album, but they're nice songs of their own right.

You And Me And The Mountain

Their second release is quite a different listen. Shelving the dense math rock and the psychedelic folk experiments, they opt for an almost pop sound. The electric guitars get toned down a bit, and while they still offer some pretty technical stuff, the overall sound is much more palatable if you were turned off by their debut. Another interesting aspect is the percussion. It's a lot more varied this time around, making use of tambourines, vibraphones, and other assorted clicks and whirrs. It's definitely a fresh update of the jazzy, spastic beats from the first album. On the other hand, the bass seems to take the backstage for this one, which is a bit disappointing given how much I liked it the first time around. However the vocals are a bigger focus this time around, which I guess is a bit of a mixed bag depending on how you took to them before. They seem a lot more harmonious to me, but that's just my opinion. Lyrically they're just as inscrutable as before, if not more so (who the hell is Ted Zancha anyway?), but that seems to be something they're cultivating, for better or for worse. In any case, their second album is, if not growth, at least an expansion of their sound, and it's certainly worth a listen.

Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. by Einstürzende Neubauten. So far Hospitalistische Kinder/Engel der Vernichtung is my favorite song. That kid freaks me out :P and the chanting half way through the song is pretty creepy. As much as I like it I can't help but feeling this album would seem lame if I understood what he was saying..

Listened to Clouds Taste Metallic by the Falming Lips a lot lately too. Out of the ones I've heard this one seems to be my favorite by them. Listening to the music makes me feel really happy, but while paying attention to the lyrics some of the songs seem pretty sad. That contrast is pretty interesting i guess.. I'm not sure if I shold bother listening to their earlier stuff. If someones heard that stuff it'd be helpful if you could tell me if its worth listening to.

Also diggin' Rip it Off by Times New Viking. I'm amazed at how low the rating for this is on rate your music..
Signatures are for losers…

The Smashing Pumpkins are better than anyone remembers, even being a giant mainstream meganaut.

I heart Fatboy Slim and System of a Down for right now. I also like Gnarles Barkley; I can't seem to stay away from his music. I kinda like Ringside and espacially love Franz Ferdinand and Ima Robot.
