Alright, so I got around to listening to Dissertation, Honey by The Plot and it was not all I was hoping for. In no way would I call it a blend of punk and jazz. Yes, there are both punk and jazz tracks on this album but it's like someone took a punk album and jazz album and just shuffled them together like a deck of cards. There's none of the cohesion present in The Shape Of Punk To Come and the tracks are overly short and lacking in musical grooves or lyrical points. The high point for me really was the 30 seconds of female vocals on For Marcus. It was a breath of fresh air in a genre that is generally so masculine and it helped me get through an otherwise pretty ordinary album. Don't get me wrong, I love Red Sparowes, but I just can't imagine saying that they're the creators of the best post-rock album of all time. The bold comment really implies that the two genres are existing separately from each other on the album, but it isn't the case at all. Maybe I miss represented it from the start, a better description would be punk with elements of jazz, so of course the groove factor isn't really there. I personally love the cohesion and progression of the album, Funeral Procession wedged between One Stab Deserves Another and For Marcus is a great example of pacing.
I agree with you that lyrically they are a little vapid, and that they could benefit from some longer songs.
Anyway, you've intrigued me. I'm going to try and get my hands on The Shape of Punk to Come.
Shrug. I used to be into Explosions in the Sky, but even when I was, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Telll the Truth Shall Live Forever was my favourite album. And I don't like Godspeed You!
