I've never doubted that life exists outside of Earth...it was just a matter of time before we found a candidate for where.
The fact that we bothered sending a message is farcical, considering how unlikely it is that intelligent life (if residing there) would understand the content. Even if they managed to decipher it and shoot back a reply, it would take another 20 years to get here, making it 40 years before we'd get something back. I don't know about you, but waiting 40 years for a text message I might not understand is a little crazy.
But, good to know that we've found something interesting.

I am so psyched to hear about this. Just to think that I might know that we aren't alone in the universe before I day... It gives me goosebumps. The idea that its star will far out-live ours is an interesting thought, I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the very far off future (providing there is no intelligent life there, which is very likely) we end up colonizing the planet, given it has the right atmosphere. Although I'm sure we could find a way around that without too much of a problem.

Yeah man, screw that. I mean, it's like going to the moon. What a crazy and stupid idea!Mute Monk wrote: Even if they managed to decipher it and shoot back a reply, it would take another 20 years to get here, making it 40 years before we'd get something back. You realise of course that just because it's the right temperature means close to shit all. The number of perameters that determine if a planet can support life is vast, and temperature is just one of them. I highly doubt there is any life there, or even that it's inhabitable at all.

In particular it needs to have a magnetic core, otherwise cosmic radiation kills everything. Earth is the only rocky planet we're aware of with a magnetic field, which is a major barrier to colonization of Mars and Venus.Destiny wrote:You realise of course that just because it's the right temperature means close to shit all. Mercury also has a magnetic field, actually. Not a significant one but it's there.scythe wrote:In particular it needs to have a magnetic core, otherwise cosmic radiation kills everything. But it's too close to the Sun (obviously). That's what makes the finding of a habitable planet so anticipated, it's not an everday thing. Call me stupid for getting my hopes up, but I can't help but love the idea of finding another planet with life on it.

Hell, I don't care if they have life on them, I just want one that *we* can put ourselves on and survive.

I always wished I could meet a sentient plant -- like from Perelandra or something.scythe wrote:I agree! I am satisfied by interacting with humans.Kablizzy wrote:Hell, I don't care if they have life on them, I just want one that *we* can put ourselves on and survive.

And bears don't eat sugar in their porridge! I can't believe how people missed that from the original story. Goldilocks had to go add sugar to the porridge.
