The author. If it's someone I don't know or someone whose maps I don't like, chances are that I'm not going to download it.

Mm. Maybe I should be more specific. What do you look for in terms of actually playing a map pack?

variety in gameplay, and small differences in style (I like to see the authours style, though each map should have a twist on the authours usual style)

Mostly the author. If I don't know how the quality of his maps are, I usually don't play the pack.
Or opposite!

I look for challenge and action, with a little puzzle, a prison map, and maybe some drama.

Huh, I thought I commented on this thread.

The very most important thing to me (besides fun maps) is diversity in maps. If I'm playing a map pack and encounter three or four maps that look and play in a fashion really similar to each other, I will most likely stop playing immediately.

Very much so. Diversity, Novelty, Uniqueness. Execution.

I, too, thought I'd posted here. But alas.

What do people like to see in the 'type' list in userlevels? Do prefer packs that use the type info to sort maps by difficulty, size, style, action vs puzzle vs race, etc.

A good difficulty gradient with easy maps that aren't boring in the beginning and hard maps that aren't just a stew of enemies thrown together in the end. But most of all, good maps.

I prefer all the same type, so that the maps all appear together. Doesn't matter what the type is.

I look for the same kinda stuff you look for in any other kind of entertainment: something that pulls you in from the beginning, keeps you interested throughout, and leaves you with a strong finish. The easiest way to do that is, as r_t said, to make good maps.
