After bowling with some friends we stopped at this 24 hour diner where I ordered a slice of apple pie with melted cheddar cheese on top. I received the weirdest looks from both the waiter and everyone at the table. I suppose this isn't exactly a common thing out here in California. My family is from the Midwest so I believe that's where I got that from, though I hear its popular in Canada as well. Discuss.

Insofar as Canada is concerned, I think it's just a Midwest thing again. It's not really a thing in Ontario or Quebec or BC but you'll get asked about it in restaurants in Alberta. Y'all are a bunch of farmers who like cheese on their pie.

Shit, I can understand cream cheese, but cheddar? The hell?

The "bite" from an well-aged piece of cheddar is supposed to nicely offset the sweetness of the apple pie.scythe wrote:Shit, I can understand cream cheese, but cheddar? The hell?

No, I mean, not enough people went to go see it. Inserting cheese where it doesn't belong, particularly in melted form, is characteristic of the Midwest and South.

I love pie. I love cheese. Pie with cheese? Certainly. Can't say I would have thought of that on my own, and I hadn't heard of it, and I don't know how you would get the cheese to stay on the top, and I'd kind of rather have the cheese on the side, generally, but it still sounds good.

I live in the middle of Kansas, and I've never heard of it. I blame Missouri, like all good over-zealous Kansans do.

Yeah, LF, I'm gonna need you to explain that one to me.
By which definition of "pie" is the second not a pie? And what is the second, if not a pie -- an oversized pastry?

Just making a vague comment on the fact that you guys took our glorious meat pies and made them in to deserts. And yes it is.Tsukatu wrote:Yeah, LF, I'm gonna need you to explain that one to me.
