I've just moved to university and found that mIRC and Opera IRC are blocked. Yesterday I was able to connect to IRC using Mibbit.com, which I know sucks, but I'm guessing not much else will work.
Today, however, I'm getting this error: OperServ: The session limit for your host webchat.mibbit.com has been exceeded.

I don't know if this is a block by the university, but if not do you know any way to resolve the problem?
Is there any way to get on to mIRC without a proxy?

Try to change your DNS server.

It means exactly what it says. Mibbit puts a cap on how long you can be on an IRC server from what I understand.

You could try downloading various other IRC clients. HyrdaIRC and Pidgin are what I'm familiar with and they both seem to do everything necessary. There are various others though that a Wikipedia search for "List of IRC clients" would show you.

I don't remember, but Meebo(.com) might have an IRC client.

Otherwise, if you're feeling more technical, you could find a remote machine on the outside that doesn't have that port blocked, and then tunnel all the traffic from it to you through ssh.

Thanks for the help. I wouldn't have a clue how to do what Tsukatu said, but I'll have a look into different clients.

Ok I had the same problem, and I know its not as good as mIRC or opera, but try Chatzilla. It seems to go through on the network that is at my school, I just downloaded it to Firefox and was able to get on

Make sure to type
/server irc.mountai.net in and it should go pretty well.

Good luck!

Nah, it just links a bunch of social networking and chat sites into a single place. No IRC there.
