It's not about whether the controls are okay or not, it's about the fact that we're all used to them. Since I've started playing N (about year and a half), I know all the controls without looking.veedrac wrote:heatwave wrote: • same controls as the original Ned
No. No. No.
Ned has a terrible UI [UNusable interface]. I want a good one. I laugh at your proposal. However there will be some similarities where the UI is fine (I believe in the Blender principle of one hand on the keyboard, one on the mouse).

And you think that if I'm going to build a new editor with 2x/3x or even up to some 5x the number of functions, one which would need countless layers of stacking would fit? One which would require you to re-memorise it all anyway? One that is, unfortunately, modal (quasimodal is overkill in some areas)? Unfortunately, no. The good thing is, too, that a good UI is intrinsically learn-able, habit-based and EASIER not only for the user but for ME AS WELL. There are too many benefits for a good UI to say NO, we'll do this M$'s way.EdoI wrote:It's not about whether the controls are okay or not, it's about the fact that we're all used to them. As I was saying, If you can't remember it anyway, there is no reason not to build the new bits in the new way. And if moving to a more integrated, powerful workspace is the way to do it - why not?
For more evidence, take this into account:
NR has around twice as many units as N; that requires around twice as many keyboard short-cuts.
Say the first two rows are filled, you still have some ~thrice as many options for a lot; including a default for times you don't want to path, move, resize, etc. Another 6/8 keys taken up.
Now, Copy+Cut+Paste+Save+Load+Rename+New Layer (A function I'm sure could be utilised)+All those other fancy things would then require the rest of the keyboard filled up with shortcuts. UNUSABLE. Maybe, if you were a mad professor you could crack it but this ISN'T BLENDER*. IT ISN'T WORTH TAKING AGES TO LEARN. IT WILL NOT AND CAN NOT BE THE SAME.
Plus, something can be FAMILIAR without being THE SAME.
I might have gone overboard but I am quite passionate about UI. I would love help, so don't take me wrong. This wasn't meant to turn into a rant. Anyhow, if you want to learn about my view of UI read Te Humane Interface by Jef Raskin (I haven't finished, but I love it), EVERY post these geniuses have made, learn to love Google Chrome, and hate Windows. Yes, I am mad.
*Noticing that I've previously said a philosophy of Blender was good, but Blender has another: "The only people who are going to use it are professionals, and so it doesn't matter if it takes a month to learn, as long as it's productive." Not good advice for a level editor for N.

Well, as long as the level creation UI uses the same hotkeys as the original ned, I'll be happy. You can revamp the UI, but I should still be able to hit the delete key to open the tileset editor, the 8 key to select rounded tiles, and then the "qwas" keys to select direction.

Sure, it is the actual UI I don't like in Ned ^^. Well, there will be subtle differences as I've said. Some keyboard short-cuts just can't be included. But where there are, there is no real reason to change them.heatwave wrote:Well, as long as the level creation UI uses the same hotkeys as the original ned, I'll be happy. Good Luck
I believe this won't be easier than building the NReality

This looks brilliant. Good luck.
Since no-one else has offered; if you need any graphics for your UI I'd be happy to help where I can.

Well, since I still haven't started (I don't play N anymore, so the drive just isn't there, and pygame is giving me a "hard" time on Linux - in regards to trying to use the newest version...), you probably will be wasting your time. However, some support would actually probably work as encouragement into making Red (my new name; Reality-Editor) so if you want to; I would need first some ripped images from the game. The Ninja, All the items, All the tiles, etc.NCrafter wrote:This looks brilliant. Good luck.

Again, I just don't really have the drive to make it any more... but it will be on my to-do list for a long time; just a lot lower down.
Apologies, Vee

Thanks; but I'm going to be picky - I need transparency. I do appreciate the help, but adding transparency and splitting up the tiles took me several days last time (and you sorta missed every NReality extra there is... so double the number of items there are minimum).Tunco wrote:Items and tiles. This is why I said only bother if you really want. For me at least, it's a lot of very boring and tedious work.
However - you are the only real offer of help I've had so far, and any forum activity can only be good ^^.

You could ask kkstrong or Unreality for those things, they could PM the drones and mods NReality can offer.
Oh, I nearly forgot, kkstrong's this program could help you save a lot of time. It helps you to code every extra NReality offers. ;D
Also, I really do appreciate the work you do, no one has ever tried to do such a thing before. You could PM Unreality and maybe you could work with him? That would be a lot faster.
And for the transperancy thing, I can't help you about that. I'm sorry. ;_; But I could suggest you looking through other fan programs (there are some pretty good stuff that can help you): http://metanet.2.forumer.com/index.php? ... owforum=33

Yes. I should do that. ^^.Tunco wrote:You could ask kkstrong or Unreality for those things, they could PM the drones and mods NReality can offer.
I'm mixed on this, while it will help me remember codes and such it wouldn't really integrate so... not really that important.Tunco wrote:<span>Oh, I nearly forgot, kkstrong's this">http://forum.droni.es/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=2412]this</a> program could help you save a lot of time. On the link you posted lower down it turns out two-ish people have xD None of them worked out though.Tunco wrote:Also, I really do appreciate the work you do, no one has ever tried to do such a thing before.
Thanks, but none of those seem to help. I appreciate the input greatly though ^^.Tunco wrote:You could PM Unreality and maybe you could work with him? That would be a lot faster.

Did you check out this program? It has all of the ninja poses. Might help.

That's fine. I'll just hover around and if you ever get an alpha out I'll jump on it and make some images ^__^
Good luck with getting the sprites from the mods.

It died like most projects does because the authors cant even plan right.

I suppose I should make an official comment.Sariok wrote:This was awesome.
What happened?
It is dead, and will likely stay that way. N1.5 should (*hopes*) be coming soon, relatively, making it somewhat redundant for me to restart the project. Additionally, as I have previously posted:
The main complication is a lack of motivation, especially as my programming skills were never great in regards to graphical programming. I could make the game, but you can assume that I wont.veedrac wrote:Well, since I still haven't started (I don't play N anymore, so the drive just isn't there, and pygame is giving me a "hard" time on Linux - in regards to trying to use the newest version...), you probably will be wasting your time. PS:
This sounds overly harsh. I was careful to end out a ton of warnings not to get your hopes up for completion from the start - I never gave myself more than a 50% chance to persevere through the whole thing. So in a way, I planned my failure and was 100% right. :PNPLUS wrote:It died like most projects does because the authors cant even plan right.
