So, you've spent the day having sex with your girlfriend/one-night stand/mom (I don't judge), banged out a few N maps, and now you don't know what to do with your free time. Sure, you're pretty ok at [insert your musical instrument here], but how will you show the internet how good you are at guitar/piano/kazoo/whathaveyou?

Simple. An online band.

My idea is this: Some posts a stripped down demo track. A melody and a guitar maybe, or a good drum beat, or a killer bass line, anything just to get started. And then, we build. It worked for the Postal Service. It'll work for us. Yeah, I'm sure plenty of people have tried this before, but screw them, we'll do it better.

I can play guitar pretty ok and I can sing a little bit but not really. I try to write serious songs, but as of late I've been writing songs about how my dorm bathroom is damned disgusting and how my pretend-girlfriend refuses to have anal sex with me.

Any and all instruments are welcomed (seriously, anything).

The link below is to my Ultimate Guitar page, where you can listen to a few of my songs (and in case you're wondering, the song about anal sex is called Unlistenable).

http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/CaptBadass/music/

(And no, I don't have an affinity for anal sex, I just thought it'd be funny.)

Fooooooooooooorty seven.

Plenty of people is an understatement, though those attempts were a bit different in form. I'm down with this and capable of contributing general synthesizeness, distorted rubber bands, talentless harmonica, and Game Boy tones.

Because I have seen too many of these thread die from inactivity I am going to update this RIGHT NOW.

I recorded a simple chord progression I think we can work with, which can be found here (by the by, the progression is just E A, B A E, E A, Cm B A E, E A, Cm B A E):

http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8hlRAf ... MzQy&hl=en

I then recorded a simple solo-type dealy (that's definitely not perfect but I guess it's a start). That can be found here:

http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8hlRAf ... ZGFk&hl=en

Then I put them together, covered them with filters and came up with a kind of video game-y, synthy type deal. This may or may not be the direction we go with it, but it's an idea. Considering we have 3 members at the moment and one of them specializes in synths and video games noises, we should probably make a song that has synths and video games noises. The demo can be found here:

http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8hlRAf ... YjVk&hl=en

THINGS WE NEED:

Awesome synthy stuff: cough cough maestro cough cough
A bass line: cough cough Lachesis cough cough
Lyrics: I could write some, but I was hoping we'd get some community input.
More instruments: Hell yeah. Let's make this song fucking epic.

Lyrics, Bass, Vocals. All possible.

EDIT:

Tried playing along with you, and with my base in perfect tune to a Boss Tu-2 it doesn't seem to fit.

How'd you tune up before you recorded?

Saxophone. Soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, I have them all.

I'm not very often on here though, but I'll do my best.

Huh. I was just on standard tuning, but my guitar's a little too funky for its own good sometimes. Can I hear what you had in mind?

One step closer to having an epic chorus. Awesome.

NOW THEN. Slappy, happy song: Let's come to a consensus about topic and lyrics. I have some dumb lyrics that I've written in a moleskine, but I'd prefer if we did something not entirely serious. Like, a song about how we fell in love with a lady ninja, but then she died 90 seconds later or something. I dunno. I r not good at stuffs liek dis.

I refuse to collaborate. Give vox to ATOB and I write the lyrics is my only concession.

I agree with this idea because that means I get to be atob's sassy Motown backup singer and if the lyrics suck then I can just say Slappy wrote them.

I meant what did you use, tuing tool wise. We should probably all use the same tuner, what you've recorded is slightly out and I can't write anything to it as of yet.

How about using this online tuner and recording again?

Ah. Used a Seiko ST737. But it hasn't been working consistently lately, so that's probably it. I'll record a new version later today.

Hey, atob, I know that recording is a little off base, but do you think you could record something anyway?

I only say this because I know for a fact that my tuner is broken and I need new strings, and I won't be able to get to a shop until the weekend.

So, yeah, sorry it's a little off base, but I don't expect to use any of these recordings for the "final" product anyway. Let's just get some ideas together.

I really can't work with that, it just sounds awful when I play along with it. I'd rather wait. Plus I won't have the time to do this until the weekend now.

If no one's done something by then, I'll get on it.

Downloading em now. I'll come up with something in a day or so.

EDIT: Also: I say that backing guitar and bass be fairly similar, along with the other rhythm instruments, and the lead instruments follow the synthy parts, with some people soloing during various parts of the song. Just an idea.

Sounds fine. You tried playing along with a properly tuned instrument though? The C and B notes are slightly off when I tune to my Boss Tu2.

Of course, it could be my end. But I've been using my equipment to record with others lately and I've had no bother at all.

Hmph. I want to be in on this thing, but I have no musical knowledge whatsoever.

It's settled, then. Slaps will defer to me on lyricism. Henceforth the band shall be named "Hunderbund".
