Okay, first of all...

Shit like this is a major warning sign; I usually hold that it disqualifies someone as a potential source of insight outright, so I feel that I should be fair and let you know now that I'm not going to be capable of taking you seriously from this point in the thread on. Anyone who actually buys into cliches like logic being the enemy of morality or going out of its way to attack sentimentality or other fluffy emotions needs to leave the room before any serious conversation starts. If I came into possession of a virus that's lethal to people who buy into garbage like this, I would unleash it on humanity in a heartbeat. (And because it's relevant to this thread, I'd consider it a service to humanity. ^_^)

I agree with yungerkid on this -- why is it that I should think like this?
You should think like this because the world will be better if we think like that; that's a scientific fact. Answer that with your precious logic.
I'm just going to pretend that I didn't notice you condemning logic and trying to use science to support your point in the same breath, because I don't have time for a towerpost.
But look, the bottom line is that no one interacts meaningfully with or is affected by the hilariously ambiguous "the world". Benevolent acts are only sensible when they affect something you actually have any kind of connection with. And there are many reasons for this. Primarily, you are probably much more informed about local issues than distant ones, and can therefore better tell how to make the most positive impact. If you want to donate to some Singapore high school's fundraiser for their kayak club or what the hell ever, it's your money, but you'd probably be serving that community in Singapore better if you found a more worthwhile cause to send your money to, and this is difficult to do at a distance. By acting locally, you'd also be returning favors that you've been given, which builds good relationships with the people you actually have any realistic chance of ever interacting with. Besides which, unless you're some crazy-wealthy philanthropist, your contributions to smaller, localized charities will probably mean much more, especially because they're so much less likely to get attention from anyone outside of the community. Do you seriously think you're making a meaningful contribution to global problems compared to international organizations who are throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at them? Feed the homeless in your own goddamn county, because no one else is going to.
Universezero wrote:As for what I've done? Uh, I guess donations. We sometimes do charity things at school.
Oh, snap. I've already mentioned some things that I've done, and your self-righteous ass has only done a handful of donations that had to come to you? You're getting your ass kicked in the benevolence pissing contest you wanted to start with Mr. Cold, Selfish Logic Man? Is that some major ؟ or what?

That quote is applicable in so many ways to so much that I see around me. I love it.

The fuck Suki?

We're all a part of the world, therefore we have influence on how it shapes out. People think that just because they are one in a world of billions means that they will have little impact on it; and to some extent, this is true. But if we all do something that will have an effect on our world, then each individual person is responsible for that happening.

Also, Suki, I think your view on 'the world' is a little distorted. To me, the world represents what I see and hear around me, and that includes the people around me as well. If I have made just one person's life better, then to me that has made the world better.

Note this isn't in the 'debate' forum, and is instead in the general disscussion forum. That is why I didn't post as seriously as you did. I would have thought that was obvious by my Futurama quote.

Aside from a few volunteer jobs I've done, not much ;_; On a different note:

You know, I felt really good the other day at Luby's. Obviously not because of the food, but because I held the door for some old guy with a walker, and then the next door, and then helped him get in his car and drive off. Whole process was like ten minutes or something.

He blessed me.

I'm going to return to my kinky porn now.
