Nerds? wait are they still around?

Talk about whatever is on your mind, if it doesn't go anywhere else.

I was thinking the other night that in this modern world of ours, can a nerd really be a nerd? For example, Facebook millions of people use it and even online video games like WOW and mw2 have fans from children to adults to the people ypu though never player a video game in their life. I know heaps of people at my high school/college that play games(even girls(not to be sexist)). so what are your thoughts?

Yes, but the definition has changed significantly. Now it's ambiguous in a different way.

I totally just read that as, "I'd hate to be the only black guy stuck using v1.4."

I like this style of OP.

Anyway, I heard a definition a while back that I think is relevant. A nerd is somebody specialized in a particular thing-- star wars nerd, computer nerd, 1700's in France nerd -- but a geek is somebody who embraces subcultural things in general-- hipster music, anime, Herzog films. And with the boon of the internet, everybody wants to believe that they are an expert and that they are deep into the shit that interests them. Which is why every other iPod has a band you would never expect that person to listen to, like a regular person with Lady Gaga, weezer and Jay-Z also having an MF Doom album.

So, in sum, I believe that the internet has perhaps made things that are geek fodder maybe cool again, or maybe just let people feel like they are cool when they are into them.

That's really not what we're discussing here.

Edit: well, I guess the alt text is of a little relevance.

In fawk's defense, I also thought that xkcd comic was the source Slappy was referring to.

I had always been told that's how nerd was to be used. Geek on the other hand I had no idea. That's kind of interesting.

I'm familiar with a different set of definitions.
nerd: someone who puts a high value on and is successful in academia
geek: someone with exceptional aptitude for and/or knowledge of a specific topic, e.g. computer geek, math geek
dork: a socially inept person, esp. one whose frequent social blunders are related to his geekery
dweeb: a dork who is also annoying and physically frail

I... Enjoy Suki's definitions. Interestingly enough, I had some sort of idea that those were somewhat accurate.

Also I would say that I'm maybe a nerd with a touch of geek, and a little peppering of dork.

Everybody is a nerd with atleast something. If they arn't they generally just tend to be pretty dull.

A geek is what i think your talking about; those weird people that arn't really socially accepted. It is very much still a relevent term because they are still freakin' everywhere.
